From Silence to Strength: A Conversation with Maggie Bertram

The Cerritos College Active Minds Chapter is pleased to present guest speaker Maggie Bertram, a nationally recognized speaker from Active Minds Inc. to our students from 4:30 to 5:50 on Wednesday, September 14, 2016 in LC 155. This event is free! "She leads audiences through her story of striving for flawlessness, coming out, internalized homophobia, anorexia and recovery, to let people know that there is a reason to expect light in the darkness. Determined to be a perfect friend, student, athlete, musician, and daughter, Maggie struggled with obsessive-compulsive behaviors until developing an eating disorder during her junior year of college, eventually being diagnosed with major depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and anorexia nervosa. By the time she graduated summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from college, she had come out as a lesbian to her friends, family, and professors, and had successfully completed an inpatient/outpatient treatment program (activeminds.org, 2016).
