Cheer

Michael Oh

What do you think about the cheerleading outfits?

Cheerleaders. Loud cheerleaders. Annoying, loud cheerleaders. Skimpy, annoying, loud, cheerleaders.

I went to the football game last Saturday and found myself utterly annoyed by the cheerleaders.

As soon as I saw them I was like, “Oh my God.”

I thought to myself, “What the hell are they wearing.”

Then I answered my own question, “Nothing.”

You would think that as the years pass by cheerleaders would get better at, well, cheerleading, but no.

Instead, they are getting better at explicitly showing off their body and hardly doing any cheerleading, if any at all.

It’s baffling when you go to a football game, or any game for that matter, and find yourself stopping dead on your tracks with jaws wide open over something that has nothing to do with the game at all.

Don’t get me wrong.

I have nothing against the cheerleaders.

Hell, I wanted to try out for cheerleading.

I was the captain of my drill and cheerleading squad a few years ago.

It’s the way they display themselves that truly disturbs me.

Small skirts and short shirts that could easily be mistaken for bras with added long sleeves is what they wear.

Some of the women had spandex shorts longer than the actual skirt.

The whole point of the under shorts is for them to be kept under the skirt, not on top of it.
And the shirts? Come on, really?

I don’t even think they should be called shirts.

There should be a term for something as revealing as that.

The closest thing I could think of really is: a bra.

Some of the other women would raise their arms to cheer and would show the lower portion of their bra.

We don’t need to see that.

Most people don’t go to football games to watch a whole bunch of half-naked cheerleaders.

Seriously, what’s the point? What’s their point?

What are they trying to prove? That they are attractive?

What are they trying to achieve out of wearing something like that?
What are they trying to get out of wearing pretty much nothing?

If they wanted to show off their bodies to more than half of the world, they might as well be strippers.

Then at least they would be doing what they want to do and be getting paid for it.

The cheerleaders would be getting something for wearing nothing.

As she was passing by me, I heard one of the cheerleaders say, “My skirt is not short enough.”

I think from that point on I was just disgusted.

Hey, if you’ve got a nice body, show it off.

Just don’t display yourself in the wrong way.

Don’t come off as an easy, skimpy cheerleader.

I told my friend what I had heard and he said, “Yeah. I agree with them.”

Then he laughed.

I guess that’s what they are looking for.

They want attention from guys, or any attention at all.

Maybe they get satisfaction out of knowing or thinking that guys actually find them appealing.

Honestly, if you feel you need to show off your legs and stomach to feel comforted, then you really have reached a low level of self-esteem.

Don’t be so damn insecure.

Don’t think you need to show your body off to get noticed or get any sort of respect.

Respect yourself and give yourself some real value.

If you’re a cheerleader, cheer your butt off, but don’t show your butt off.

Because seriously, by wearing what you are wearing, you are just asking to get laid.

I read the paper today. My my my...You're running for homecoming queen?! It will be very interesting to see how the cheerleaders, the mothers and any respectful commentator to your article will react to you when they see you in the flesh.

You obviously have no tact to be a real journalist. Just a trashy gossip columnist.

Ignorant writer, please are you that jealous that you took the time to write this article. How can you compare a cheerleader to a stipper, someone needs to take you into a strip club so you can shut your mouth. If you haven't recieved a reality check we're in the year 2008 and now a days the styles of uniforms have changed for cheerleaders just for your information. If you were a fomer cheerleader than you should know what cheerleading is all about and its hard work. You also wouldn't judge one for what she's wearing let alone compare her to a stripper. Hopefully if you were ever to attend a NFL game you wont get a heart attack when you see those cheerleaders uniforms. It's people like you that can sometimes make this world a harsh place to live in take your negative attitude else where. How about theraphy ;)

I agree with the writer in some points including the fact the SOME not all of the girls, are using cheerleading as a way to get attention from cetain people for their own personal benefits, not that of the team and to show "school spirit." For example, the writer states that she over heard one of the girls mention that her 'skirt was not short enough' I don't know why, but I doubt she said her skirt was not short enough because she couldn't move righ in it. I was a cheerleader for my high school and our skirts were a little longer than this and we were able to move fine, we even won plenty of competitions. I think we all have to agree that this is in fact what some girls think about when they are eager to become cheerleaders... "Ohh we get to wear short skirts, I know that's what they guy will like..." Again I'm not saying all or even stereotyping in anyway, I know from expereience and from what I noticed from girls that were even on my squad.

In rebutle to what the writer wrote, I'd have to disagree that these girls look like strippers. They are wearing typical cheerleading uniforms. If you have ever went to a professional football or baskeball game, the women there are wearing a lot more revealing clothing. Not only does it help them with being able to manover easily, it also sells! Of course when you go to a game, you are there to see the actual game, but a lot of people also go to be entertained by the cheerleaders, and well, they have to get your attention somehow! Now, I've yet to attend a Cerritos College football game this season, but I'm sure the girls can't be THAT bad. I mean I'm sure there are auditions conducted and from there only the best are chosen. It's not easy and takes a lot of hard work. Maybe not remembering the steps but being able to coordinate yourself with sometimes 20 other girls takes a lot of practice and patience with working with eachother. It sounds as though the writer here may have unprofessionally stereotyped the entire squad because of what a few of teh members had said. However this is an opinion and will be taken that way, maybe it was a little on the offensive side though. Lets learn from this one. =)

I am apalled that something this horrible would ever be published! The ignorant writer, as well as the editor, deserve to be removed from the newspaper. How could someone bring down their own school in such a manner! I have always been proud of my school, and for someone to bring down its own peers in such a way is disgraceful. It is ridiculous that nothing has been done to these people. Seriously, Im pretty sure the article was written by someone incredibly jealous!

Personally, this article gave me a better reason to see cheerleaders. Not because the cheerleaders may look like "strippers" but because I want to see if what this staff writer saw is that "unbearable" for anyone to see.
Now I know everybody is entitled to their own opinion...so here is mine:
To say that the cheerleaders look like "strippers" means that who wrote this article looks hundreds of times better than the cheerleaders. Right?

i think it's pretty disrespectful to say that cheerleaders are sluts just because of their uniform
but once again that was just her opinion, but it's too much for a college newpaper to publish.
i've never been a cheerleader or anything like that but i felt offended, even knowing that it had nothing
to do with me. I just think Elieth could have toned it down a bit because it was pretty offensive.

I have done both cheerleading and gymnastics at some point in my life. Both of these sports take a lot of time, effort, and dedication. They are very similar in relation to skills, and most competent cheerleaders can perform almost any move that a gymnast can do, and yes, both by necessity, wear close fitting outfits that may be revealing. I'm a swimmer for Cerritos, and my uniform is just as revealing as any gymnast or cheerleader, should I be worried about the next issue of this newspaper commenting on my uniform? The cheerleaders deserve the same respect as any other athlete on campus, and should not under any circumstance be compared to strippers. Even under the title of 'opinions', I found this article to be strongly offensive and inappropriate. Also, the use of explicatives was completely unprofessional on the part of the writer. The writer should definitely re-evaluate the way she presents her thoughts on subjects. To the editors: please try and use better judgment when publishing an article, this was offensive, unnecessary and crude. Also, shouldn't our school newspaper be supporting our school and its' students, not putting them down?

I just have one thing ask. I want the Elise at Staff Writer at TalonMarks.com to wear the Cheer clothing and see how it helps you easily move and perform the dance moves. It's like swimsuit. Besides, I think bashing on Cheerleader clothing is so against Women's rights, Pro-choice, and Civil rights. We are not in Islamic Country.

To ALL you people who are do not have the balls to put your real name to your comments just simply shows the fact that you are insecure about who you are and your words mean NOTHING. For instance the "former cheerleader captain", "fellow cheer coach", "proud cheer mom" why not add your name? Afraid of something? It just goes to show your intellectual level or lack of... In a previous comment, some one mentioned the fact that this was an OPINION article. Do you people not know what that means? I have to agree that an opinion is just that and if you people who are supposedly in college cannot understand that then you should not be going to college. That is just the view point of one person and if you agree or not that's a different topic all together. GET OVER IT! The article is what it is.

I think that one of the strong points in the article was on how matching undergarments should be worn and not using colors that do not match with the uniform. Perhaps there should be a class undergarments 101 so that people know how to dress appropriately. You would not go to a party with light color shirt and dark undergarments, that's just a no no and I think that this was one of the points that Elieth was trying to make.

Most of you are a bunch of haters. Elieth wrote what she wrote because it was her opinion, but that does not mean everyone has to agree. That "proud cheer mom" that suggested that Elieth gets some self esteem help, perhaps she is the one who needs it because her opinion has NOTHING to do with the content of the article, its just a bunch of gibberish coming out her her mouth. If people want to counter an opinion then that's fine counter and give yours but don't be an idiot and by witting down nonsense that has nothing to do with the other peoples opinion. It just goes to show you how low your intellectual level is or lack of intelligence for someone that is involved with the higher education community.

Get a grip, an opinion is an opinion, and everyone has their right to voice it out weather is orally, written, or other. Its our first amendment right NO ONE has the right to deny it from anyone.

Cerritos College Cheer Captain for 2006-2007
Sat Sep 20 2008 12:29
It saddens me that people now a days judge by the looks and not by the talent. Before you did this article you should have done your research. Look into other Community Colleges such as Glendale or OCC and you'll see they have the same types of uniforms and that both schools are highly rated when it comes to Competitions. Yes, as time passes cheer uniforms have gotten smaller but the doesn't take away from the talent of the squad. I was a member of the Cerritos squad for 2 years and served as their Captain as well, in fact I was the one who began the mid drift uniforms. It's a style, Cerritos needed a new look. And, although I may no longer be a member of the squad... I had a close relationship with both my cheer coaches and I know they only want the best for the squad. It's too bad not many people can notice the good and simply point out the bad.

Wow..somebody is either jealous, insecure, out of touch with reality OR ALL THREE...these girls look great. Sure the outfits show off their mid section, but this isn't the 70's. If any of you cheerleaders are reading this, don't take this article seriously. Wear your outfit with pride and continue to cheer on your team.

Well as a student of Cerritos, I've been to some of the footbal games, and i played football all through high-school and in my opinion cheerleaders dont really do much......i mean the routines are pretty cheezy, and as for the out-fits look lets not get butt hurt because one editor stated the obvious. The words she used were not perfect, but the fact is cheerleading outfits are slutty, a hooters out-fit has more clothing on it than a cheerleading outfit. I really think, people are taking it the wrong way, saying get your facts straight......its called an observation, and i think most people would agree the outfits are skimpy, and the fact that the chick with the huge belly in the picture should no better than to try and pull that off. Really i think that if the crowd does enjoy the cheerleaders its because there getting a free show...So Grow Up, sorry cheerleaders but i give this win to elieth

Fellow Cheer Coach
Fri Sep 19 2008 16:03
Elieth,

I am a coach at a community college. I happen to know the coach at your school. I am absolutely disgusted with your approach in this article. Did you happen to take the time after the game and interview the cheerleaders and/or coach? It seems that you just simply decided to voice your opinion with very little research into your subject. Any REAL writer/journalist knows this. The first question that came to my mind when I read your article is that you must have tried out for a cheer team and didn't make it. Your bitterness clearly comes through in this article. Shame on you and shame on the editors for allowing this article to be printed. What type of school support is that? In the world we live in right now, your negativity is unnecessary, unproductive and disruptive. Do yourself a favor and get into another line of work because journalism does not look to be your strong suit.
