Guitar festival concert was boring

Concert Review

Guitars are more than just for heavy shredding.

Well at least now I know that after watching the Cerritos College First Annual Guitar Festival Concert on March 20 in the Burnight Theatre.

The Music Department announced the concert, and the idea of this was to give guitarists around Southern California a chance to spend time and perform for their peers in a manner which they feel comfortable.

From classical to jazz to soft rock, it was all the same... very boring.

I found myself trying very hard to stay awake during the concert.

Classic guitar is supposed to make you think wonderous thoughts and expand your mind to the beauty of the world.

All it made me think was, "When is this concert going to be over?"

As a guitarist, I was aware of guitars being used for many genres of music, but didn't think it was this bad.

Musicians were covering some music legends such as Bach, the tango, and even to my surprise Ozzy Osbourne's band.

The first ensemble from Cerritos College is really the only act I liked, mostly because of the awesome chorus and the head guitarists' cool bridges.

I'll admit some of the riffs in the second acts were pretty cool too.

Other than that, I must say that let classical orchrestra music stay as a classic orchestra, and leave the guitars to the rock music.

Maybe some classics can stay, like in the Mexican style, but besides that, it should die.

The electric guitar ensembles were okay at best, nothing can compare to the real thing though.

No matter how talented you are, no one can match up to Tony Iommi.

None of these people seemed to have any talent at all. It's like they picked any two-bit hack to play.

Also, did they really need a composer to guide them through the song?

I mean, who needs to be told what high notes to hit? Isn't that what the sheet music is for?

The ensemble came to Cerritos from Bellflower, and all over Southern California.

This was supposed to be the highlight of the evening, but I was disappointed.

If this was the highlight of the First Annual Guitar Festival, then please let this be the first and last.

I give this concert my worst rate yet, 1 out of 5.

I do understand this article is written in the opinion section of the Talon Marks and every person is entitled to their own review. However, maybe choosing a musician or someone that could have appreciated the guitar festival would have been a better decision to write this article. Although I was not playing in this festival the whole day was quite an experience and unlike any other opportunity to enjoy classical guitar and different styles of music. This article is offensive and unappreciative for such hard work and effort that was put into a great day. In my opinion, I can't wait for the next festival and I hope Gustavo Rangel is not reviewing it, and that the Talon Marks can find a more positive editorial writer.

Thank you.

Anybody get the fact that article is suppose to be a review? That means that it's the writers personal OPINION. I have read plenty of things in the newspaper that i don't agree with, but i don't cry about it to the their editor. Unless you were part of this guitar production i don't see why you would be so offended as to be upset with the editor. Plus its a student paper, this is where a student writer can learn from their mistaes

This article does not bode well for the newspaper nor the school. The writer can't express himself well and in addition, writes with an attitude of a middle schooler with a lot of grammatical errors. Capital letter on Tango? That's not a proper name. Using words like 'awesome' in a college-level paper just don't cut it.

And I do think that playing and reading notes, not tabs, takes a lot of hard work, persistence, and talent. So let's not knock down even 12 year olds, because the author can't even write enough complete sentences (lots of framented sentences here).

In addition, this article shows that this 'editor' has no background whatsoever regarding music, and can't read a single note to save his life. This newspaper needs to do a better job at filtering and editing its writers, as well as ensuring they have sufficient maturity to write in an impartial manner.

Having people write about stuff that they do not understand is quite embarrassing. I understand people have the right to their own opinions, but this article is terrible. I was at the concert and I appreciated all of the music. After reading this article I am dissapointed that Talon Marks would put this out. I guess they let any two-bit hack write for their paper.

Tony Iommi was in Black Sabbath, not Ozzy.

Music Legends: Ozzy, J.S. Bach, agreed. but "the Tango"? who is that?

If you know your genres so well, can you please explain to me what "mexican" style is?

Talon Marks Management: as a student looking to read a viable and intelligent report on the activities happening on campus, please reconsider a competent reporter for futurearticles. Thank you.
