Commissioner of the Inter-Club Council Suleyma Castillo explains forms for the Spring Festival to club representatives.

Cerritos College club representatives gathered together in BK 111/112 for the first spring semester Inter-Club Council meeting on January 29th.

Led by Suleyma Castillo, the commissioner of the Inter-Club Council, the group went over and discussed upcoming Cerritos campus events, deadlines and several clubs gave presentations for causes and fundraisers.

The meeting began with a few words of encouragement from the ASCC President Miles Aiello, who reminded the reps the importance of dedication, networking and remaining involved with student and campus activities.

The main topics of discussion included the start-up of the Athletics Competition, the Veterans of America campaign, the Spring Festival and the Falcon Games.

Discussion of the Spring Festival and Falcon Games and the reveal of this year’s theme, Throwback Thursday, stirred the most enthusiasm from club reps, many raising their hands with questions and concerns.

The two events, which overlap each other in the same first week of April, give clubs the opportunity to help with campus events and also give their clubs more exposure to students.

Castillo bullet-pointed the ways for clubs to get involved and what each event would consist of.

She also expressed excitement for the upcoming festivities, “It’s really cool to see the students excited, and to me I feel like this college is special because we have a lot of activities.”

The Athletics Competition is a new competition that allows clubs members to raise money for their clubs while also attending games.

Commissioner of Athletics Sara Hickman explained that its purpose was “to create more support for our athletes.”

The winners of the competition either win a cash prize to use toward their club or a club party.

The Veterans of America made a moving presentation given by Athena Sanchez, a nursing major, in support of women veterans.

The organization seeks to help end homelessness for women veterans, which they say there are currently 55,000.

Sanchez said, “Our goals are to advocate. We want people to like our Facebook page, our twitter, and share that…our ultimate goal is to bring awareness.”

The meeting also went over smaller events put on by individual clubs and Club Info Day, which will take place on Feb. 4 and 5 in Falcon Square.

Club reps left the room, complimentary candy in hand, with much to discuss.

Jose Martinez, co-vice president of the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) club said of the meeting, “Basically we get to network. The ICC goes over everything, announcements, deadlines, and things of that kind.”

Each ICC club meeting takes place the last Thursday of every month in room BK 111/112.
