Michael Barrita

Scott Watkins/TM

ASCC President Michael Barrita has been in power, as president and vice president, for two years but his time has come to end and maybe now the school will have a leader that will listen to the student body and help make Cerritos College a better place.

The biggest thing that Barrita has not done is communicate with the students of Cerritos.

He has not done enough to understand the issues most students consider important.

Many of his promises have not been fulfilled and the ones that have, have been done in a way that is not acceptable.

His biggest accomplishment is saving the Hill, this is fine but it was only important to about 50 students. When you consider about 23,000 students attending Cerritos, this accomplishment was very insignificant.

Another one his so-called accomplishments was to create a book exchange program.

This was a great idea but the follow-though was horrible.

Instead of a program to help students get their books at a more reasonable price, it turned into a glorified bulletin board in which very few students actually utilized.

One of biggest promises was to get the drinking fountains on campus replaced or repaired so students could drink clean water.

That was another great idea and there were reports made by the ASCC cabinet to target the worst drinking fountains. However, there has been no progress made on actually replacing or repairing them.

And also, good job on replacing the ASCC sign.

At least the students can enjoy a sign that is practically the same as the last one.

Hopefully with a new leadership group in power next semester, the issues that are important to students will be addressed.

Wow, 2 million dollars! I guess barrita didn’t just save the hill huh? Besides the scholarship he created, the ifalcon campaign, the fountain at the student center, the book program that helped students obtain cheaper books, saving an important student location on campus, and all the other small bills barrita worked on, I guess he did more than what this article talks about. This article does a serious injustice to a student who dedicated much time and effort in making Cerritos a better college for others. Besides his deeds, barrita always carried himself well and was an example to many students and student leaders. If he wasn’t a great public servent at Cerritos, then who is. Just think 2.3 million dollars because of the effort he and others put in. This paper should do like an article on him to correct what seems to be nothing less then slander.

Criticisms! Critisicisms! Instead of trying to help each other and make things WORK for the better!

how does the policies that barrita worked on only represent the interest of a small group. Barrita's administration was able to rasie scholarships for two consecutive years, with a totally new 1500 dollar scholarship being established this year. i don't remember the name of it but i did hear about it through one of my instructors. or how about the ifalcon campaign that is suppose to help with student success. I don't see how these ideas are centered around representing a small group of students. i dont know any student who doesn't want cheeper books, more money in their pocket, and succeed in school. this writer did nothing but rant in his editorial. there is no evidence to back his claims up.

Forget dismissing the President, how about dismissing a student writer that is far under-qualified to report any information truthfully or professionally. Is this a ranting blog, or an online editorial?

Jimmy, you could be part of a club and hardly be involved with it. Unless you know the duties and responsibilities Barrita underwent, hence through participating in Student Government, i say you keep your falsely based opinions to yourself.

For too many years the ASCC exists as a seemingly insignicant excercise in civics for a campus of 22,000 plus students, the vast majority never participating in the selection of a leader for students. When I read that, say, 800 or 900, give or take a few, vote for campus wide offices and the office holder is given wide responsibilites such as representing students on the Cerritos board, it give pause to wonder, "What are they trying to accomplish?' Why not just cut to the quick and have students interested in "leading" put their names in a hat and have a simple drawing? It would save time and energy. Then the 99.9% of students would just carry on as usual, getting an education.

I am involed in the school I am in a club and read the paper to see what is going on I know as a student that Barrita has rallied for things that help such a small portion of the student body that nobody cares. I know that he does not talk to any student on campus that he does not know. He does not represent us well and he makes me wish for to see Jason Macias bake as the president.

What would you know, Jimmy? Were you involved in ASCC? Were you involved in clubs and extracurricular activities? no. since you were not, you have no right talking about something you know nothing about, mr big head who has no life but to criticize others and not see how they themselves can improve the school. you're dumb,.

First off I agree that Barrita has done nothing to help Cerritos and I for one is glad he will be leaving
