Overtime win sends Falcons to the State Championship Game

Cerritos College came from behind to win in a double-overtime game against Fresno City, 2-1, on Dec. 5.

Fresno City managed to score late in the first half the game and held the Falcons to just five shots in the first half.

It wasn’t until the 14th minute that the Falcons managed to tie the game up, sending the game into overtime.

Ruben Gonzalez, head coach for the Falcons, said that this goal gave the Falcons that extra push and momentum for the team needed to win.

The Falcons bombarded the Rams with 12 shots in the second half and 10 shots in overtime.

The Rams were a difficult team to play and the team deserved to play in the championship game, according to Gonzalez.

“They were a good team; we knew that coming in, “Gonzalez said, “I had seen them early in the season. They’re deserving of actually being in the championship game.”

Ashley Web, who scored the game winner for Cerritos College, said that Fresno City wasn’t playing with the same level of intensity the team had in the first half before she scored.

“We knew that before the penalty kick, that their defense and their whole team was breaking down. We knew they were getting tired and our team is built on fitness,” Webb Said.

For Webb, this goal lit a fire in her team to keep making plays in order to win the game.

He said that the team will have to put pressure early on and score against a good team.

“Double over time, you never want to get into because you know the next day your legs are going to be tired,” she said.

Webb said the strategy for the Falcons is to come well rested, and expect the same type of game heading into the championship game.

The Falcons will play the State Championship Game on Sunday at 2pm against Santiago Canyon in Mt. Sac.
