Audio Drama Podcasts Reinvent Storytelling

Still haven’t found a new Netflix show to marathon? Find yourself unmotivated to see the latest flick? Maybe Audio Drama Podcasts are your answer!

As the name suggests, they are episodic stories told through audio! Think TV shows or movies, but without the pictures. If you’ve never heard one before, I’d say go for it!

Like with any movie or TV show they have an overarching story line, but what makes these so cool is that with the lack of visuals, you can picture the story however you like as you listen!

Additionally, if you’re able to keep up with them in real time, the creators are always eager to interact with the listeners and fans!

One of the more popular Audio Drama Podcasts “Welcome To Nightvale” has over 7,000 ratings on iTunes.

It is told through the style of a radio show reporting the strange events that go on in the small desert town of Nightvale, has been on-going for close to five years now!

A majority of Audio Drama Podcasts can stay on-going for years! That’s possible with a number of the creator-teams behind these podcasts being supported from the listeners and fan-base themselves through a Patron page. Supporting can give the listener exclusive content or merchandise depending on the podcast.

A majority of these Audio Drama Podcasts tend to fall into the Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Paranormal genres with a variety of unique stories to tell. It’d be impossible not to find something to match your taste and listen to.

There are currently on-going audio dramas that are truly taking storytelling to a whole other level, from the gripping plots to the variety of inclusion and diversity through characters that include Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Queer Intersex Asexual + representation, characters from a number of ethnic cultures and religions, discussion of mental health illness and much more.

Sarah Montano, business administration major, said that she had never heard of an Audio Drama Podcasts before.

“It sounds cool and something I’d like to listen to! And a good way to spend leisure time.”

Additionally through this refreshing way of storytelling you can give your eyes a break and immerse yourself into the story.

Depending on the podcast itself, the episodes can range from 10 minutes to close to an hour.

It’s best to consider what genre or types of stories you like! Still unsure? Check out these recommendations:

  • A fan of superheroes? check out, The Bright Sessions! Told through therapy session recordings, it follows therapist Dr. Bright as she counsels her patients who have unique supernatural abilities!
  • love space or science-fiction? Check out Wolf 359. Told through audio logs of communications officer Doug Eiffel, he records the day-to-day happenings on U.S.S. Hephaestus Research Station as he monitors static alongside his team while they orbit the red dwarf star Wolf 359.
  • A history buff? Check out the Audio Dime Museum! You follow the Curator as she reveals the mysterious stories behind the objects in her oddities shop!

So, if you’re looking for a unique and immersive way of storytelling, try out Audio Drama Podcasts!
