Studio art major Alexis Rivera, was among six other students chosen by Cerritos College Art Gallery curator James MacDevitt to be able to paint murals at different local restaurants.

Rivera was given the option to pick one of three different locations to work with, when she decided to work with North Shore Poke, a Hawaiian poke restaurant located in the city of Cerritos.

“We met up with the business owner and we had one of his assistants help out with us communicating and finding out what the business owner wanted and where in the business he wanted it.”

She decided to collaborate with this specific location due to the fact that she thought she would have been able to express a very vivid mural. “I really liked the theme they had going on, I thought it could be really colorful. There were bakeries and salons, and I thought I couldn’t really connect with places like that compared to this ocean theme.”

Her mural consists of two fish that are alive; she describes it as a very “colorful”, “vibrant” and “full of love” painting. The style that Rivera applied was an abstract, a lose and fluid piece done with acrylic paint only. Her biggest challenge was dealing with time, since she only had one week to finish it.

She stated she will continue on painting personal paintings as well as custom art work for locations and businesses.

Rivera will be transferring to a university next semester to continue her studies as an art studio major.
