Univision’s 31st annual Premios Lo Nuestro award ceremony demonstrated the power of Latin music by embracing the unity in the Latin community and highlighted the many political issues of today.

The three-hour event which is considered to be the Grammys of Latin music featured many tributes and special guest performances by many of Latin music veterans.

Many of these tributes were dedicated to Brazilian singer, Roberto Carlos, who received the Excellence Award, while American Tejano group, Intocable and Puerto Rican urban rapper, Daddy Yankee received the Lifetime Achievement Award for their career trajectories.

The Reggaeton genre was one of the main highlights of the night in which many artists performed and won the most awards.

The once forbidden, underground genre of the island of Puerto Rico, has come a long way into the mainstream Latin music and now it is internationally loved by million of admirers in which has also launched successful careers such as those of Daddy Yankee, J Balvin, Don Omar, Wisin and Yandel.

The genre has also launched of many award-winning female singers such Ivy Queen, Natti Natasha and Karol G despite of competing in a predominantly male industry.

The awards ceremony made sure to include and recognize the inclusion of women in that genre with more nominations and performances in this year.

The proclaimed Queen of the night, with the most nominations in the history of the show for a woman was Dominican singer, Natti Natasha who publicly mentioned the challenges of gender roles within Reggaeton and took home four awards.

This year the show definitely stepped up its game on gender equality.

Premios Lo Nuestro was mainly focused on combining the talents of old and new artists in which brought something different to the table.

This year’s annual event was truly worth the watch until the very end since it was musically organized well by its variety of artists.

Among these people were music veterans such as Marc Anthony, Daddy Yankee, Yandel, Thalia, Romeo Santos, Alejandro Sanz, Mana and many others.

Newcomer artists such as Ozuna were the big winners of the night, took home seven awards among them the prestigious “Urban Male of the Year” and “Song of the Year.”

The Puerto Rican urban singer proved to the hottest Latin star of the night despite of the many controversies surrounding him in the past few weeks on accusations of the possible murder of Latin Trap artist, Kevin Fret.

Other winners were also honored such as J Balvin, Karol G, Calibre 50, Reik, Enrique Iglesias, CNCO, Christian Nodal and newcomer group, T3R Elemento.

Among these many winners, the show gave an opportunity for everyone in different genres to shine at its best.

One of the most important highlights of the night, was the support and awareness of the current Venezuela political crisis.

Stars such as Alejandro Sanz and Mexican rock group, Mana expressed their message of optimism for the South American country.

Venezuelan beauty queen and actress, Patricia Velasquez, announced to the audience her participation at the Live Aid benefit concert that will take place in the upcoming weekend on the Colombian city of Cúcuta.

The purpose of this concert is to raise international attention to the current political situation while raising funds for the victims of the Venezuelan dictatorship.

Premios Lo Nuestro demonstrated unity in the Latin music industry by highlighting its progressive accomplishments and situations that the Latin community is currently going through.
