The Cerritos College Music Department and the Associated Students of Cerritos College presented “Do You Hear What I Hear?” on Friday.

Director of the Applied Music program and coordinator of the keyboard studies program, Christine Sotomayor-Lopez hosts the program and hosts the program five to six times a year.

The objective of the program is to present piano literature, as either solo or chamber music. The lecture consist of musical elements, history and performance.

“I’m hoping in focusing in one particular topic, I’m hoping to be able to bring in a different audience of students who are in Music 100, who are the music history students, and also in Music 105 and my piano students,” Lopez said.

The Friday program had Cerritos College faculty perform, filling the room with attentive listeners.

“We could really feel the emotion of the performers,” Eisha del Villar, nursing major and piano ensemble student said.

First time performer at, “Do You Hear What I Hear,” Bruce Russell, adjunct piano instructor, performed Johannes Brahms’ Concerto No. 1 in D minor along with fellow colleague Greg Schreiner.

“It was fun, I’m glad we got to do it. It’s a beautiful piece and I’m glad we got to share it with the students,” Russell said.

Adjunct Faculty Member Sung Ae Lee played a piano concerto in D flat major by Russian composer Sergei Prokoflev. It was a piano duet where Dr. Lee played the piano and Lopez conducted the orchestra.

“It’s always exciting, more exciting to play for students, my own students, because I have a lot of students from my own class and my applied students and also all the music students and non music students coming in and hearing something like this for the first time in their lives and then they seem to really enjoy it and appreciate it and it’s so rewarding to me and it’s always great to play for my students,” Lee said.
