Graphic Design Club holds fall meetings

Cerritos College members of the Graphic Design Club gather in room FA-61 every second and fourth Tuesday of the month at 11 a.m. for an artistic meeting.

“We accept all types of people, all types of creativity with a love for art, come by the club.” said President Kayla Reefer of the Graphic Design club.

Vice president Christina Martinez agrees with Reefer the President and welcomes anyone to join the club, they are open to anyone that has ideas. “You don’t have to be a graphic design major or even an art major to have a good idea and turn it in to something on paper or on a computer and it can be great even though it starts from something small.” said Martinez

Corey Wilson, the Treasurer of the Graphic Design club, adds to what Reefer and Martinez had to say. “ Great ideas can come from anywhere and no matter who you are if you have an idea always try to build on it because it can turn in to something great.”

Some of the topics discussed at the club meeting are the following:

  • Fundraiser Event
  • AIGA.org
  • 4th Annual Los Angeles Printers Fair
  • Voting

The fundraiser is an event that the graphic designs club wants to put together for the month of October to raise money for its club.

Ideas the club members talked about for the fundraiser were creating halloween designs for buttons and cupcakes that the members can sell and also allow people to personalize their own buttons.

The cost for a personalized button is $3.00 and regular buttons would be $1.00, although the price is not finalized these are only ideas and the club hopes to get started on them soon.

Art major Carlos Hurtado thought it was good idea for the fundraiser to sell glow in the dark wrist bands, his club members agreed. “We can do glow in the dark writs bands, my band has them and you can buy 200 of them for only $126.00,” said Hurtado

AIGA.org is a professional association for design. Reefer talked about how AIGA can help students hunt for graphic design jobs and internships as well.

To become a member of AIGA an annual fee of $50.00 per person is required and the club agrees it is well worth it.

As a member of AIGA you can find jobs that are not posted on sites like craigslist, becoming a member allows you access to find jobs, events, speakers and much more.

The 4th Annual Los Angeles Printers Fair was also announced at the club meeting.

Members of the club got to see a short video from last years fair to see what it’s all about. The fair takes place on Oct. 6 from 9-5 p.m. in the city of Torrance.

The club members have a variety of events to chose from.

The famous Art Walk in Downtown Los Angeles was also introduced at the clubs meeting. Students are getting together for a field trip to the Art Walk on Oct. 11.

Graphic Design major Armando Villa said, “I’d love to get some work up in the gallery space, that would be really exciting.”

Voting was another topic that the graphic design club talked about.

Professor Bonnie Barrett, Faculty Advisor for the Graphic Design club, talked about the “get out the vote posters.”

The posters are meant to influence people to register and vote for this years presidential election.

The club members agree they all have the knack when it comes to creative designing.

Students of the graphic design club will be using their imaginations to create posters for the “get out the vote posters.”

Club members hope to have enough time to use their imaginations and create posters to put up all over the Cerritos College campus in hopes of getting the word out before the registration deadline this Oct. 1st.

Michael Tarbet is a double major in Graphic Design/Animation, he is excited about all the events taking place this fall semester.

“The Los Angeles International Printing Museum is really great, everyone should come out and see, specially if you don’t know anything about print making or printing or graphic design, it all started with all the hand printers, it’s a really great experience and a lot of free stuff,” Tarbet said.

The Graphic Design club covered many events and answered lots of member’s questions.

The club is always looking for new ideas, if you are interested you can meet with the club next Tuesday Oct. 9th at 11 a.m. to hear more about their upcoming events.
