As what’s likely to be the last major Wii release from Nintendo, “The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword” is a fitting finale for the console. (MCT)

Eiji Aonuma, producer of the Legend of Zelda series, recently gave Nintendo and gaming fans some exciting news about the future of the Zelda franchise for the Wii U console.

“Our mission in developing this new Zelda game for Wii U is quite plainly to re-think the conventions of Zelda,” said Aonuma in his video statement.

“We want to set aside these ‘conventions’, get back to basics and create a new-born Zelda game so that the player can best enjoy the real essence of the franchise.”

Jose Gonzalez, a video game design major said, “Well I personally cannot wait for the new Zelda game. It seems pretty exciting and I’m really anticipating it.”

The news didn’t stop there, as Aonuma announced that in order to keep fans ready and waiting for a new game, players can look forward to a high-definition version of a previous Zelda game, “The Wind Waker,” and a 3D Super Mario Game.

These two games will set the standard for future Wii U games, bringing Nintendo into the HD gaming field alongside Sony’s PlayStation 3 and Microsoft’s XBox 360 and perhaps change the minds of some students who seem to think the Wii U is a step backward.

“I think they’ve gone too far,” says Viviana Gallo, a student and avid gamer here on campus. “[Nintendo] should have just stuck to what they had.”

It seems that others agree with her, as forecasts for Wii U sales dropped at the end of January.

While still in development, these games may just be the saving grace for what appears to be a sinking system. Hopefully Nintendo fans won’t be strayed off by these sales and buy future games.
