Collector’s Edition of DVDs are worth buying

People don’t mind buying DVDs from $10 to $20, the average price according to a BPE report in 2010. Now the question is what would cause someone to spend $30, $40, even $80 for a single movie?

The answer lies in the whole package, not just in a single feature.

Five-to-10 dollar DVDs and blu-rays tend to have just the main picture and a commentary track, while regular 15-to-20 dollar editions usually have deleted scenes and at least one or two behind-the-scene features.

The primary selling points of collector’s editions are better picture quality and an abundance of special features. Most even come with stylistic packaging or real-life collectibles.

Take for an example the collector’s edition of Charlie Chaplin’s “Monsieur Verdoux”, priced at $31.99 at The Criterion Collection.

The actual picture was made from a 2k digital resolution and with an uncompressed monaural soundtrack on the blu-ray edition. The 2k digital resolution is the second-largest resolution, behind only 4k, which is the size of an IMAX production.

The only other available DVDs or blu-rays of “Monsieur Verdoux” are from Image Entertainment with zero special features, not even subtitles, and from Warner Home Video’s “Chaplin Collection”, with only one documentary and a few subtitles options.

The Criterion Collection’s collector’s edition comes with four high-quality documentaries and a physical booklet with actual reprinted pieces by Chaplin himself and various critics.

Modern movies also get collector’s editions that are worth the money, but tend to sell out a lot faster.

The “Dark Knight Rises: Broken Cowl Edition” sold out the morning of its release date.

Those collector’s editions tend to focus more on collectables, like the broken Batman mask that came in the Broken Cowl edition, and are usually sold in low quantities.

Collector’s editions are worth the purchase, with the buyer able to own a piece of film history.

You can pre-order The Criterion Collection’s Collector’s Edition of “Monsieur Verdoux” on Amazon now. It will be released on March 26, 2013.
