Audrey Karrasch returns to LA

Pop singer and “The Voice” contestant, Audrey Karrasch returned to Los Angeles to perform at Dirty Laundry last Thursday.

Fresh off the release of her new EP, “Forever Audrey”, moving forward in her career seems to be the main focus.

From humble beginnings in Reno, Nevada with a big family, singing was something she knew would be a part of her life forever.

In high school, Karrasch experimented in the grungy indie rock scene. She began to sing in her first rock band, Passed Judgement.

The band saw small success with a spot in a Reno concert featuring local bands. As time went on she became a nomad traveling from place to place in pursuit of dream.

After a failed tryout with American Idol she detoured her life.

When she was 18, she packed up and moved to New York where she had a short lived modeling career until she decided to fulfill her musical desire.

From there she went to Charlotte, North Carolina then moved unto Kansas City, Missouri in search of finding her sound by writing music, refining her skills and meeting with different producers.

She found her way onto season four of The Voice; landing a spot on Team Usher.

Even though she did not make it to the live shows, she was still able to get her name out there and jump start her career.

Now she resides in Nashville, Tennessee where she is working on her debut album.

TM: Who is Audrey?

AK: “I am a singer songwriter born in Reno, Nevada. I come from a big family, there’s seven of us, none of them are really musical. Everyone is either in medical school, or, like, my brother just became an attorney. I was the only one that didn’t go to college. I have lived, kinda all over. I moved to New York City and lived there for three years then I moved to Charlotte, and Kansas City. Now, I live Nashville but my mom lives here so I come back and forth.”

TM: Growing up what pushed and inspired you to want to be a singer?

AK: “Music was kind of the only thing that I was good at. I knew that at an early age. My family was always supportive but figured it was more of a hobby. Once I was a freshman in high school they kind of knew this what [you] are going to do. I didn’t have any other interest.”

TM: What were your musical inspiration?

AK: “I grew up Mormon. There was pressure to always listen to appropriate music but that’s why i felt really rebellious to get, like, a Beastie Boys CD. I was into grungy, terrible punk bands. I’m not an artist like that it’s kind of where it just started. I started singing, listening, to Shania Twain and I was in some jazz bands. It goes from like Beastie Boys, Ella Fitzgerald, Amy Winehouse, imogen heap. I was really inspired by her for a long time because she created her own music and that’s what lead me to learn pro tools- producing your own music and others too.”

TM: What do you want people to feel when listening to your new EP Forever Audrey?

AK: “ I want people to feel good. Its my first solo EP so i really tried to embody all emotions into the 5 songs. I wanted them to be like really feel good songs. It’s easy for me to sing and write about break ups. So it was a challenge for me to write happy songs. That kinda became the theme of it. I hope it’s a good introduction to what my music is evolving to be.”

TM: What has the process been like, in your career, to get to this point?

AK: It hasn’t been easy. I recently left the management I was with doing this last EP. When you come off a show like [American Idol], or “The Voice,” you want as much help you can get because it’s a hard thing to come back from. It was very important to me that the EP was right and I had good people help me out that I felt were veterans in the industry. My lesson from that was to follow your heart in what you’re doing and not allow people to control the environment.”

TM: What’s your favorite song from the EP?

AK: “My Favorite song is West Coast but I’m not a fan of the final product. I like singing that song live more than I like the recording. The one that is most precious to me is “Light speed” because that’s the first song that I wrote. But as far as performing West Coast is my most favorite.”

TM: What can we expect from the album you’re working on? Any songs from the EP?

AK: “I’ve actually already recreated some of [the songs]. I recreated butterfly because I felt the song is really powerful but I wanted to create a whole new vibe to it. I just wanted to give it a fresh new start. So that song might be on it. and I’ve written three new songs as well. Hopefully it’ll be out by the end of this year.”

TM: Has it all been worth it?

AK: “I guess[…] I have more wisdom now. That sounds kind of weird. But it’s worth it because I can continue what i’m doing and I know what I like and don’t like or want. I think it’ll feel even more fulfilling when i’m doing everything by myself.”
