We have all stumbled upon the aesthetic side of Instagram at one point in time, you know what I am referring to.

All the men and women featured there are in name brand clothing, thinking that a name that is not their own defines them, that Gucci, Versace and Louis Vuitton will set them apart from everyone else.

Because of this level of arrogance, many are discouraged and disillusioned in developing their own style because they feel they will never be considered fashionable if they are not in possession of a Michael Kors bag.

As Coco Chanel said, “Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.”

You can be interested in fashion without being interested in brands. Fashion is how you perceive it, you shouldn’t limit yourself to what’s considered “trendy.”

Ideally, fashion should be used to express yourself, not to announce your financial status.

With that being said, be unabashedly you. Dress to accommodate your mood.

Dress to express your interest in a particular subculture,

The point is, wear what makes you feel comfortable.

Don’t feel obligated to pick a certain style and stick to it. It is easy to get stuck in a style rut if you feel obligated to commit to a way of dressing.

When I first started dressing like I was trapped in the 20th Century, that’s exactly how I felt.

I felt I had to maintain a level of authenticity, because that was expected of me.

But guess what? I like wearing bright purple nail polish and dying my hair unnatural hues.

Never forget that you have no one to please but yourself.

Don’t be afraid to try a style that you have been dying to try.

If I had a nickel for everytime someone had complimented me on my fashion choices then immediately tell me that they would love to dress like that but they are either too shy or fear that it won’t look right on them, I would have handful of nickels.

Now, a handful of nickels may not seem like a lot to many but to me that’s a handful too much.

Who dared to make these people feel discouraged to wear something new or something that isn’t considered, by mainstream society, to be trendy?

As a society, we feel the need to feel accepted by others and go with the flow, and you know what we should be saying to that?

“Am I the only person in this city who doesn’t just do whatevs, whenevs? Fudge it to heck, where a demon with a thousand wee-wees fudges it forever!”

According to that quote from the show, “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” we should be out there living our lives to the fullest wearing whatever the hell we want.

You want to wear hot pants with a tiara, then rock it, sir.

Want to look like everyday is Halloween? Then do it, Morticia.

Don’t let mainstream society dictate who you are! Express yourself whichever way you please!

Just don’t go out naked.
