La Vuelta: Familia, Comunidad, Ancestralidad
(The Return: Family, Community, Ancestry)
August 25 - October 10, 2025
"Part of the multi-institutional SUR:biennial, La Vuelta (The Return), presents recent work by seven young Latinx artists working with, and through, individual and collective memories. In Spanish, the term la vuelta implies a (re)turn, including a repeated lap, as in a racetrack, looping back upon itself. Interlocking cycles of nostalgia, bubbling up from the past, permeate the work of the artists in the exhibition, be they interpersonal familial relationships, shared communal narratives, or inherited artifacts of ancestral culture (materials, techniques, imagery, and aesthetics).
Founded in 2011 by Cerritos College Art Gallery and Rio Hondo College Art Gallery, the SUR:biennial seeks to explore the complex notions of globalization and exchange that takes place in the ambiguous borderlands between Los Angeles and the broader 'South.' The independently-curated biennial exhibitions showcase recent and newly-commissioned works by local and international artists who have been influenced by the cultures and artistic traditions of Mexico, Central & South America, and the Caribbean. The 8th SUR:biennial will take place during the Fall 2025 semester (August - December 2025), featuring exhibitions at locations throughout Southern California (from San Diego to Ventura .. and everywhere in between)."
