The Cerritos softball team has come limping out of the gate.
With only one returning starter, pitcher Julie Angel, the team will have to try to mature quickly.
Since the Falcons’ season started on Jan. 27, they have only won one game in seven tries.
The Falcons opened with two losses in Bakersfield, but did not let it worry them too much because they felt they were caught a little off guard.
According to Gladys Rodriguez, left fielder for last year’s team, the weather was colder than they expected, and they were miserable while they were there.
On Wednesday they returned to the familiar surroundings of home and more comfortable weather.
They also got to play in front of two time softball Olympic gold medalist Dr. Dot Richardson, who happened to be in attendance.
She said, “I just love softball, I’m just out here enjoying the game and enjoying the beautiful field.”
Unfortunately for the Falcons, their opponent, Santa Ana was just too strong for them, winning 13-0.
The Falcons rounded out the week with a loss at L.A. Valley before heading out to the College of the Desert Tournament for three games over the weekend.
In the tournament, Cerritos took on Taft and Citrus Saturday, and Sunday played College of the Desert and San Diego City.
The Falcons went one and four at the tournament, recording their first win of the season against Citrus.
According to head coach Lynn Laughon, Shortstop Brenda Con, second baseman Ariana Contreras and third baseman/pitcher Virginia Brido (all freshmen) are expected to make big contributions this season.
Rodriquez said, “The team has a lot of potential, they just need to get it together.”
