Hoe Down Days set next week

Hoe Down Days set next week

Students will have the chance to participate in the 22nd annual Hoe Down Days on next week in various locations around campus.

The campus quad will be transformed into a western-like carnival on Tuesday beginning at 10 a.m., and everyone is welcome to enjoy the entertainment.

There will be about 20 campus clubs in the quad participating in this event. The money raised by each club is theirs to keep.

“We are doing this to have a good time. It’s a good fundraiser and at the same time we socialize with other organizations,” said Maria Delara, president of Alpha Gamma Sigma.

The clubs will be involved in a variety of carnival booths, such as the lime-a-lime, duck races and a popcorn booth.

The cosmetology department will be providing inexpensive services to the students and a dunk tank will also be at the carnival with all of its proceedings going to the Associated Students of Cerritos College scholarships.

There will also be a couple of climbing rocks that are about 50 feet high, character artists, musicians and a puppeteer.

“Also on Tuesday, in the evening there will be entertainment and Arby’s sandwiches in the social sciences quad at 6 p.m.,” said Dean Ackland, coordinator of student activities.

On Wednesday, there will be the chili cook-off and the Mr. Cerritos contest.

The cook-off is a chili contest that all students are encouraged to participate in. Judges include faculty and past administrators.

The participants of the cook-off are encouraged to be in the Student Center with their chili at about 10 a.m.

The judging will begin at about 10:30 a.m. After the judging is completed, everyone is welcome to go and try out all the contestants’ chili.

Also on Wednesday, there will be the Mr. Cerritos contest. Clubs choose a male member to represent their club and the “lucky” man will participate in a variety of categories, including a swim suit competition.

The contest will begin at 11 a.m.

To finalize the yearly event, the ASCC will be providing a luncheon and a concert on Thursday. Students with a valid I.D. will receive a lunch made up of chicken, corn-on-the-cob, baked beans and a drink.

A concert will also be held at the Student Center.

“Hoe Down Days will be a great opportunity for all students to socialize and enjoy a few days of activities,” said Tim Stavrakis, vice president of ASCC.
