Pitcher throws shutout

The Falcons’ Erick Morales pitched eight scoreless innings, recording four strikeouts and allowing just five hits in shutting out East Los Angeles College, 7-0 Saturday at Kincaid Field.

Cerritos is now 11-8 for the season, 6-2 in the South Coast Conference.

Morales, who now has a 5-0 record with three complete games, said that the offense, defense and pitching all came through.

“Our pitching took advantage of our good defense.”

Bryan Baker drove in Joseph Ammirato on a ground out to make the score 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning.

In the second inning, Carl Johnson of the Falcons drove in Hector Zamora on a single, then Ammirato singled in center fielder Kalen Norton to make the score 3-0.

Falcon right fielder Ruben Salazar singled in Baker to make the score 4-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Jesse Lugo drove in Ammirato on a single to make the score 5-0 in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Norton hit his third homerun of the season. He drove in Brett Cayton to make the score 7-0 in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Norton said that the team played the way they wanted to play, meaning that everybody did what they needed to do in order to win. “If we keep playing this way we will win.

“Nothing could stop this team from scoring. Not even the defensive changes that the Huskies made.”

Ivan Rodriguez pitched the final inning for Cerritos.

He said he uses the performance of the other pitchers to keep him going when he comes in to close the game.

“Everything came through for us, meaning the pitching, the defense and the offense.”

Falcon Coach Ken Gaylord said that everything came through, meaning the pitching, hitting and defense. “The defensive changes that the Huskies made didn’t stop the team from scoring.”

Ammirato said that the team played all-around baseball, meaning that everybody did what they had to in order to win.

“When they made their defensive changes we just stuck to our game plan, which was to put the ball into play and play defense.”

Notes

Norton clubbed a three-run homer in the third inning as the Falcons recorded 15 hits in a 13-6 win over Compton College Mar. 13 at Kincaid Field.

The game was moved to Cerritos when Compton was unable to get its field ready by game time.

Salazar had four hits and drove in two runs, and scored three times.

Ammirato scored twice and drove in two runs.

Designated hitter Carl Johnson also drove in two runs.
