Men’s water polo team looks for stronger season

The Cerritos College men’s waterpolo team is looking forward to being better than last season. Last year the team finished 10-19 overall and third place at 2-4 in the conference.

David Marcato, holeguard and pointman, said that more people are showing up to practice and that the team has some promising freshmen and sophomores.

“I think we have a chance of beating other teams more so than last year, because the team is stronger. We have added more speed to our defense and made our defense much better.”

He said that the team is more alert on the ball.

“Two teams that we need to beat this year are Long Beach City College and Mount San Antonio College.

“As the season goes on our dedication and good work ethic will determine how good we will be.

“In practice the team is working hard and pushing each other to be the best.”

Jerry Portillo, driver, said that the team has a good chance of going all the way.

“What makes me think that we are ready for the season is our hard work and dedication in practice. I have also seen lots of improvement in practice.”

He said that the team has improved its conditioning and endurance. “We are able to gain more power as the game goes on.

“We are also able to stop other teams through our endurance. As long as we work together and work hard we will able to beat Long Beach and Mt. SAC.”

Coach Ron Parks said that the key returning players are Duje Kaliterna, Johnny Zegarra, David Marcato, Andy Vasquez, and Charlie Eldridge.

“We’ve been working hard on our defense.

“We need to improve on working together, because we have a new team and they have to learn our system.”

He said that the toughest team to beat will be Long Beach. “Pasadena might be tough for us to beat, also Mt. SAC.

“I think we will match-up pretty good against most of the teams in the conference.

“In practice we are pushing each other to be the best. I see a lot of potential, but everything depends on the team willing to work together.”

He said that this team is the most devoted team that he has coached in the last five years.

“As long as the team works together, that will determine how far they will go.”
