Falcons defeat #1 Bakersfield

The Cerritos College football team scored an upset over Bakersfield College, the top-ranked team in Southern California, 21-19 Saturday at Falcon Stadium.

Falcon wide receiver Chris Chatman, who scored two touchdowns, said that the defense and special teams came up big in the game. “The offense could have done better. Our quarterback needs to get the pressure off him. I think we look good for the next game.”

In the first quarter running back Sammy Moore caught quarterback Kevin Bryan’s pass for a 55-yard touchdown to give the Renegades a 7-0 lead.

Falcon linebacker John Lopez recovered a fumble on the 11-yard line of the Renegades in the second quarter. Quarterback Mike Harrison then threw a touchdown pass to Chatman.

The extra-point attempt by Adam Sonntag was missed, and Cerritos trailed 7-6.

Harrison and Chatman hooked-up again on a 37-yard touchdown pass to make the score 12-7. The Falcons missed the two-point try.

In the third quarter, Harrison ran in a 10-yard touchdown making the score 18-7.

The Falcons again missed the two-point try.

In the fourth quarter Renegade running back Robert Thomas made the score 18-13 on a 16-yard touchdown run.

They missed the two-point try.

In the fourth quarter the Renegades took a 19-18 lead when safety James McGill recovered a fumble by Harrison and ran it in for a touchdown.

Sonntag made a field goal to give the Falcons the lead again, 21-19 with four minutes left in the game.

Bakersfield attempted to take the lead when it lined up to kick a field goal.

The kick was blocked by linebacker Philip Perry, and the game was over.

The Falcons will play at College of the Canyons Saturday at 7 p.m.

Falcon coach Frank Mazzotta said that the team played good and that they just had to overcome first mistakes.

Falcon running back Josh Herrera said, “We were slow in the first half.” He said that the offense made more big plays. “The defense stepped up big time.”
