Bill Hector

Bill+Hector

Bill Hector has been a busy man lately. Besides running for one of three open seats on the Cerritos College Board of Trustees, he’s had other things on his mind.

As postmaster of the Lawndale Post Office for the past three years and the Compton Post Office for the past 12, Hector has been trying to come up with new security measures to protect the public during the current Anthrax scare that is terrorizing our nation.

Hector has been a postal employee for the past 32 years, where he started in 1969, first as a clerk and then as a letter carrier. He later worked his way into various management positions, prior to being appointed to his postmaster positions.

Hector was born in Shreveport, Louisiana, and moved to California in 1956. He attended schools in Compton, graduated from Fremont High School in Los Angeles and attended Los Angeles Trade Technical College.

He now resides in Lakewood and has four daughters and one son.

Hector is very active in the Compton School District and the Community College District. He has been concerned with issues of district boundaries, testing, funding, and the state and federal governments’ roles in education.

He also participates in numerous organizations such as the Compton Rotary, Busines Advisory Council, School-to-Work, and the State Department of Rehabilitation.

Hector also participates in the American Cancer Society, South Central Unit and is a member of the National Association of Postmasters of the United States.

As to why he is running for the Board of Trustees, Hector stated, “I think the Cerritos College Board of Trustees needs a change in its point of view and I think I could bring about that change.”

He also thinks that the area surrounding Cerritos College is badly in need of an ESL program, that the college needs an expanded daycare program and could like to make sure that the college provides a quality education for its students.

He would also like to see students receive real-world preparation for the work environment.

Hector is endorsed by Ulis Williams, President/Superintendent of Compton Community College; Carl Robinson, Board of Trustees, Compton Community College; Cloria Patillo, President, Compton Unified School District; Limon Kirkwood, State Department of Rehabilitation; Ray L. Cordova, District Director; Congresswoman Grace Napolitano; Dell Huff, Senior Deputy; and Supervisor Yvonne Brathwaite-Burke.
