Kevin Fulton

Kevin Fulton

Anyone who meets Kevin Fulton can see that he has a promising future.

This 29-year-old single father who is running for an open seat on the Cerritos College Board of Trustees has many accomplishments already.

Fulton, who is now a Bellflower resident, grew up in the city of Downey and graduated from Downey High School in 1989.

He was a teenage father and concerned about providing for his new baby, so he joined the army at age 17.

“The army told me I would see the world,” Fulton said, “And boy, did I see the world.”

Fulton served in Operation Desert Shield, Operation Desert Storm and Operation Provide Comfort, which protected Kurdish refugees in Turkey.

He also witnessed the fall of the Berlin Wall in Germany.

When he completed his stint in the army, Fulton attended Cerritos College earning an associate of arts degree and graduating with honors.

“When there was a seat open on the Board, I thought that I could bring a different perspective to the Board. I was someone who had actually gone here.

“I know the difficulties students have with scheduling and things like that.

“Being a veteran and a single parent when I attended here, I thought I could express something different than what they are used to having on the board.”

He then attended California State University Fullerton and Western State Law School, where he recently earned his Juris Doctorate degree.

Fulton has been interning at the Orange County District Attorney’s Office while awaiting his bar examination results, which are coming out in November.

Fulton also currently is employed at the Norwalk-La Mirada School District working in Communications where he prepares reports and works with the school board on the K-12 grade level.

If elected to the Board of Trustees, Fulton would like to reach out to the non-traditional student.

He knows the problems that go along with being a single parent that is trying to attend school.

He wants the college to provide more online classes, more childcare, condensed scheduling, and a calendar that is more in sync with elementary school calendars.

“I would love to have the opportunity to represent a view that I don’t think is being represented,” Fulton said.

“There are veterans out there who are in terrible conditions.

“There are single parents out there who are in terrible conditions.

“There are minorities who are in terrible conditions.

“I think I am strong enough that I can communicate the problems that they may be experiencing. I can take the abuse the system gives when you try to force someone to look at problems. I have an obligation to try to help those who are weaker. Where that came from, I don’t know. Maybe it’s a little bit of military. Maybe it’s a little bit of Southern upbringing.”

Fulton thinks that this bid for a seat on the Cerritos College Board of Trustees has been an eye-opening experience.

He has spent a lot of time on the Cerritos College campus and is a little disappointed that the students, instructors and unions do not seem more interested in having a chance to change three seats on the Board.

He feels that these are the people that will be most affected by the results of the election, and they have not set up any forums on campus to meet the candidates and, as of yet, have not endorsed any candidates.

Outside of campus he has been running a grass roots campaign, attending community organization meetings, and canvassing neighborhoods.

Fulton describes himself 10 years from now as being a successful attorney and a contributing member of his community.

He’s shown himself to be a responsible, hard-working individual that wants to help people who are less fortunate than he has been.

Kevin Fulton believes he can bring a fresh perspective to the Cerritos College Board of Trustees.
