Soccer: Women score against, beat El Camino

For the first time in their eight-year history, the Cerritos College women’s soccer team scored a goal against El Camino.

But the Falcons took it one further. They Falcons posted a 3-0 win in their South Coast Conference opened to record their first ever win against the Warriors.

They followed that with a hard-fought 1-0 triumph over Antelope Valley in a non-conference game. The wins extend the team’s winning streak to four in a row and runs their season mark to 5-1-0 overall.

The win over El Camino did not come without its setbacks. Freshman Grisell Ramirez, the team’s leading scorer, was given a red card with 25 minutes left in the game.

As she was driving to the net, Ramirez was taken down in the box after her feet tangled with a Warrior defender, who also has her arms wrapped around Ramirez.

As the two went down, Ramirez extended her legs and the referee concluded that she tried to kick the defender and was given the card.

But prior to her ejection, Ramirez closed out the scoring late in the first half, as she took a pass from sophomore Leslie Almanza. It was the play of Almanza that got the Falcons going on the day. Just three minutes into the game, freshman Maria Mejia fed her a fine pass, which sent Almanza in on a breakaway. She drilled a shot past the Warrior goalkeeper and the Falcons had their first ever goal against El Camino.

It was Almanza who scored the team’s second goal in the 18th minute, as freshman Lizet Nunez was credited with an assist. In goal, freshman Mayra Flores turned away eight shots on the day.
