chrissy Guzman, a member of the psychology club, helps with its bake sale Tueday. The bakesale was held on Valentine’s Day which competed with the blood drive as well as the Valentine’s Day bake sale.

The Psychology Club held a Valentine’s Day bake sale last Tuesday in the Student Center in hopes of raising money for an annual ceremony for new members of the club.

At the same time the Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance and the Single Parents in College for Excellence clubs held their own bake sale.

According to Chrissy Guzman, psychology major, the bake sale was held because “(the club) hoped to raise more than the $120 raised last semester during Halloween.”

Mario San Juan, Psychology Club president, said that this bake sale was, “the first of two bake sales to be held this semester.”

Right now in the club there are 40 new members San Juan said, and usually, “there are 20 members in (the psychology club).”

Among the items that were sold during the sale were brownies, bags of Hershey’s Kisses, cupcakes and chocolate covered strawberries.

The chocolate covered strawberries were not among the items sold last semester Guzman said, “(with these) items being sold the club tries to be different than before.”

She added that the hope was for students to have a new feeling for what was being displayed.

With the money that was raised San Juan said that he hopes the money would be used not only for the annual ceremony of new members but the Psychology Club will be having an annual speaker series.

Furthermore, the money will be used for members to “go out and do community services,” San Juan said.

Other clubs participated in the Valentine’s Day bake sale, Tuesday, to promote the holiday and show support to the single life and safe sex.

“You don’t have anyone for Valentine’s Day, love yourself!” one member of S.P.I.C.E. said.

Valentines Day, full of couples holding hands, embracing and showing how much they appreciate one another, but what about the not so lucky ones who only get treats from themselves?

Asja Hall, also a member of S.P.I.C.E., attracts her customers in with expressions like “we don’t need a man to be happy day.”

The motto of the club was S.A.D., single awareness day.

As most people walked around as a pair you can see those who were alone and the treats were used to comfort those who were feeling down and out, explained Maria Garcia, also a member of S.P.I.C.E.

Using comfort was what drew in the customers for the group and it makes them laugh and smile says Hall.

A man buys a slice of cake for himself, with a single rose for his significant other.

Garcia adds they receive a lot of support and comments like “we’ll support them because my mom is single”

Kat Reynoso said that the F.M.L.A. participates because it is “advertising safety.”

Those who visited their table could purchase a treat and pick up condoms, they were free.

The majority of the customers picking up the condoms were females Susie Naranjo, club member, said.

This co-ed club also handed out pamphlets about many diseases caused by unprotected sex.

Not afraid to tell the truth and cause controversy about the holiday, which not only promotes love and care but it also deals with sex.

F.M.L.A. will be using its money to promote its upcoming event scheduled Feb. 28 and Mar. 1, the Vagina Monologues.

Tickets will be on sale at the door of the event at the Teleconference Center.

S.P.I.C.E. proceeds will be going to t-shirts for the club. Most of the club money is used for activities with children.
