Earning $24 million in its opening weekend, Tom Dey’s newest film since “Showtime” in 2002, “Failure to Launch,” propelled itself to the top of the box office charts.

While the film’s plot is semi-typical as is every other romantic comedy out there, the story revolves around a 30-something-year-old Tripp (Matthew McConaughey), still living with his parents (Kathy Bates and Terry Bradshaw), who falls in love with Paula (Sarah Jessica Parker), the woman of his dreams.

Little does he know, though, that Paula has been hired by his parents as a way to get Tripp out of his parents’ house.

The film is very reminiscent of McConaughey’s last romantic comedy, “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days.”

Both films fashioned a stereotypical plot involving love and deceit between the two main characters. However, Dey manages to add several special touches to make this movie completely idiosyncratic.

Casting directors couldn’t have picked a better lead when casting Parker as the female protagonist.

Parker’s originality, quirkiness and overall enthusiasm for filmmaking provide for a movie where “Sex in The City” fans are not disappointed.

And while McConaughey and Parker both offered superb performances, it was the secondary actors in “Failure” who stole the show, particularly, Zooey Deschanel.

Known for her previous comedic roles in “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” and “Elf,” Deschanel did not disappoint.

Deschanel plays Paula’s alcoholic roommate who cannot seem to attract the right kind of guy, and who’s goal throughout the movie is to bring about the demise of a mocking bird that has made a nest in a tree near her window.

Deschanel’s attempts at disposing of the bird make for some of the funniest scenes in the movie.

Also included in the film’s plot is a reference to the natural balance in love and nature.

Because of his unnatural interruptions and mishaps, McConaughey is subjected to several different animal attacks by normally peaceful animals – a lizard, a chipmunk and a dolphin.

These mini fight scenes where animals always win also provide entertainment for moviegoers looking for a good laugh.

On the whole, the movie, with all its eccentricities and laugh-out-lead scenes, was well worth the long-awaited release date.
