Gvollnan looks for ‘godly’ musical cast

Eight students auditioned for the musical “Godspell” on Monday night at the Burnight Theatre.

“Godspell” is similar to that of the musical “Jesus Christ Superstar.” The action largely follows the canonical gospels’ accounts of the last weeks of Jesus’ life, beginning with Jesus and his followers arriving in Jerusalem and ending with the Crucifixion.

Twentieth-century attitude and sensibilities as well as contemporary slang pervade the lyrics, and ironic allusions to modern life are scattered throughout the political depiction of the events that will be directed by Jim Gvollnan.

“Godspell” will be performed on April 27-28, May 2-5 at 8 p.m. and May 6 at 2 p.m.

Those who auditioned were to sing a musical number and dance. However, those who were there said that they were not auditioning for a particular role.

Afterward, students like Terrance Calcsan, film major, were nervous beforehand but upon completing the audition for the musical, found it quite fun.

On being nervous, he said, “Of course everyone gets nervous to audition for anything, but once I started, everyone, including the director, got quiet.”

He added that the reason why he came to the auditions was because he had been offstage for a year.

Glenn Lucas, theatre arts major, said that he had performed in another rendition of “Godspell” a long time ago, although he didn’t say how long ago that was.

On being nervous, he said that it happens all the time as well but that for a brief moment a person gets to be someone else and then it’s over.

For Alexander Salas, theatre arts major, it was more than just being onstage that made him want to come. “It was the fact that my performance came from the heart,” he explained, “and after auditioning for ‘Godspell’ I’m feeling confident that I did well enough to be in it.”
