Music department to host scholarship concert

Cerritos College’s Music Department is having its ninth annual Scott Henderson Memorial Scholarship Concert March 30 at 7:30 p.m. in the Burnight Center Theatre.

Scott Henderson first taught in the music program as a french horn instructor then later on became a voice teacher after his peers discovered his baritone voice. During his 23-year tenure, he spent most of it as head of the department.

The scholarship program was created in memory of Henderson after his passing in April of 97 to have students doing what they loved while raising money for other students who are not able to afford college in hopes of pursuing a career in music.

The concert consists of students who are in the Applied Music Program. The program is made for students who already have excellent skills in playing an instrument or skills in voice. It helps provide more practice so students can sharpen their skills in areas their already good in and areas they need improvement in.

Only the best students will be chosen to perform in the concert, performances will consist of vocalists, and many students playing instruments such as: pianists, violinists, and clarinets.

Rosemarie Medina, secretary of the music department said “It’s a true experience to watch.”

“Our music department does concerts all semster long but our Memorial Concert is one of our highlights,” Medina said.
