“Habits of mind” on agenda for cabinet

The Associated Students Cerritos College cabinet, fresh with new ideas for the fall and spring semesters, held its second meeting on Monday.

According to ASCC President Michael Barrita, the main theme would be the Habits of Mind campaign, a plan designed to promote student success among new college students.

“It’s kinda like a whole process of thought and changing the mindset of the students here at Cerritos, 1st generation college students,” President Barrita said. “This is something we want big on campus. We want the bookstore to be passing out material where students are buying books, so students are being hit with the material constantly. We want banners across campus. We want faculty members talking about it.”

The name of the campaign is iFalcon. “It’s like an idea, ‘I Falcon,’ then you say what falcon stands for … it’s also like an acronym,” Abrahim Ramirez, ASCC commissioner for student services said.

Falcon stands for:? Focus.? Advance by improving.? Link-up.? Comprehend.? Organize.? New ideas.

An important aspect of this campaign will be focus groups. Abraham Ramirez said the focus groups are shared government by the whole campus to discuss an idea.

“We want this Habits of Mind campaign to have as much student input as possible … it’s an input of both faculty and students. What we do is we get about 10 to 12 students, and we’ve already meet once this summer, to kind of discuss ideas and to see how he ideas are going to play with theses students,” Michael Barrita said.

Barrita said the ASCC plans to launch the campaign in January.

He also added: “And we’re looking to spend quit a lot of money on it. I know it’s probably gonna be above fifty thousand dollars. It might be a little more, might be a little less, depending on who we talk to when it comes to graphics and all that stuff.”

Another important for project is continuing the book service, where students post their used books for sale on boards near the bookstore.

Although the book service is not officially run by the ASCC but separately, Barrita would like to see greater organization. “My ideal would be for these boards to have to kind of funding from somewhere and to have staff on them and basically organize the books that students are selling by classroom, price, an online website. The general idea is to get somewhere where it is very organized.”

In addition to the iFalcon campaign, the ASCC is working on bringing more scholarships to Cerritos College. Barrita said they were talking to councilmen from Norwalk and that they’re reaching out to Downey to see if either the city council or the members themselves would donate money as a scholarship.

Asked whether these potential scholarships would be only for students from those districts, Barrita said, “That’s something I have to discuss with Foundation. I have to first talk to Foundation and basically see what the process is for getting that kind of money into a scholarship, what requirements are available. But obviously, we’re trying to make this the easiest and practical way for students to apply for scholarships.”

The ASCC is working on having the fountain by the student center developed, perhaps cover the fountain with a garden, depending on how feasible the plan is, Barrita said.
