Negron- ASCC Cabinet Meeting

Mondays ASCC cabinet Meeting focused on more ideas behind the campaign “Habits of the Mind”; also, Gary Cain, coordinator of Judicial Affairs, spoke about students rights.

Habits of the Mind adopted a new icon, iFalcon, resembling the iphone.

This new feature is to attract students to grow curious about iFalcon and to see what it is all about.

The idea behind the iFalcon campaign is to introduce habits, behaviors, and attitudes to become successful students on campus here at Cerritos College.

Many students enter Cerritos College with almost no knowledge of how to succeed in college, therefore they struggle academically because they dont apply themselves the way many of our successful students do.

The iFalcon’s, Habits of the Mind, will be focused around the acronym F.A.L.C.O.N.
            F- Focus
            A- Advance
            L- Link Up
           C- Comprehend
           O- Organize
           N- New Ideas

Simply because 80% of students are 1st generation students, this program is mainly focused on them to adopt such habits.

Kevin Martinez, Commisioner of Communication and Fine Arts, stated “I think its a pretty good idea to get out to people and help students to feel more comfortable with the campus and oppportunites, instead of just leaving them stranded”.

As a website for the iFalcon is in progress, encouraging messages will be available to students to view peridoically.

As well as in classrooms and around campus weekly messages will be sent to faculty and posted up around campus in which will be delievered to students in words of encouragment and useful information to help them here at Cerritos College.

“We want to keep this campaign simple, informative, and attractive to students,” President of the ASCC Michael Barrita explained.

The primary goal of the iFalcon campaign is to have information available to students on the internet and in the classroom, to practice Habits and lead students to success.

The goal for the spring semester of 2009 is to launch, promote, and manage the campaign, iFalcon.

Barrita also brought ip new ideas incorporated with the campaign which includes the idea of a “transfer push”.

With the “transfer push”, the faculty members will have a roster list of students names and whether or not these students are eligible to transfer out of Cerritos College.

Students will have to complete all of the necessary classes in order to transfer, but it is the faculty staff member’s job to step in, push and encourage students individually about transfering.

Further into the meeting, Gary Cain, coordinator of Judicial Affairs spoke on students rights and their right to know about them.

Former basketball coach of 11 years and continuing with 24 years involved in the L.A. Unified School District, Cain is new in the position.

He gave a brief presentation to the students at the ASCC executive Cabinet meeting about students rights and also their responsiblitites here on campus at Cerritos College.

Cain handed out a brochure with a list of 29 student standards Codes of Conduct to the students at the ASCC Cabinet meeting.

He then continued to explain that students may not even be aware of their rights and the laws they have to abide by here at campus.

Students have access to the Student Standard Code of Conduct in their Fall 2008 student class schedule book, located on pages 160-166, “unfortunately nobody reads it until its too late” states Cain.

Gary Cain is primarily the judge for the judicial affairs and his job is to help students resolve any problems they have at campus, either with other students or their teachers, responsibly.

He teaches responsible acts that you need to do before it gets to a point where it is beyond control.

“The campus needs to be looked upon as healthy, safe, and to resolve issues with out violating the Code of Conduct,”
