An unusual thing happened on Jan. 30 because Cerritos College was hit with snow, which was provided by the Child Development Center for a day of snow and fun.

Snow Day is also known as Parent Involvement Day because it is an opportunity for children and parents to play together in the snow.

Snow Day is just for children in the daycare program and their parents. It is not for children outside the program.

Director Debra Ward stated, “However, if the children in the program have other siblings at home, their siblings and families are welcomed to come and participate.”

Some parents sat to the side of all the snow action and watched the children have snow fights while other parents like Francie Quaas-Berryman got involved in the snow fight.

Clearly, all the children had fun with the event because they had parents like Quaas-Berryman to help them win the snowball fight.

Staff member Judy Krause watched all the children from the top of the hill to make sure all the children played safely.

If a child needed help to get to the top of the hill, she assisted the child to assure safety. 

Debra Davidson brought her child because she thought, “It would be a good event for (my daughter) to interact outside of school with the other children and the staff.”

Davidson was pleased to see her child have fun playing in the snow and thought it was funny when she began to eat the snow.

Parents like Davidson were pleased with the child development program and was happy to praise the staff.

“I thank the staff here for taking good care of our children or relatives and hopefully they continue this extracurricular activity.”

Aside from the snowball fights, there were other activities for the children to do.

If children wanted to take a break from all the playing, inside the building parents and children were able to watch movies together and with a $5 fee parents and children were able to watch the movie with snacks.

With the $5 coupon, they were able to get one popcorn, one nachos, two churros and all-you-can-drink hot chocolate.

Last year was the first year the center did the snow day and it was very successful, despite not having enough snow.

Ward said, “We did not have enough snow last year for the 400 people that showed up. So this year, to avoid that we bought double the snow from what we had last year.”
