Treats for Troops is a fund-raiser that was put together by the Student Veteran’s Club to provide amenities to the troops over sea’s that might not be readily available to them.

The club was started by a veteran of the Army, Karla Leyva, during the fall semester at Cerritos College to help other veterans with a smooth transition into a student civilian lifestyle.

Treats for Troops was an idea that Leyva and her younger sister Kristina Leyva came up with after Karla received care packages from her sister while she was over seas.

Kristina said, “I was always thinking of my sister and wanted to send her a little piece of home while being so far away while fighting for our country.

“So my sister and I decided that since it meant so much to her, that other enlisted would benefit from these packages as well.”

Since the idea came to fruition there have been garbage cans marked with “Treats for Troops” designating drop off for non-perishable items so that students of Cerritos could contribute.

Other sources have helped to contribute to this specific charity, one of them being the Norwalk chapter of the Moose Lodge.

“I have no idea what it would be like over there, but I know that I would appreciate receiving care packages from back home,” Ben Pendleton, adviser of the SVC, added, “The Moose Lodge of Norwalk has taken donations and the Downey chapter plans to do the same.”

The SVC continues to take donations. The marked drop box in the admissions office if there is anything that you would like to donate.

On the drop box there is a list of items that are accepted posted over the box, and for those that want to make monetary donations you can drop them off to Pendleton who is also located in the admissions office.
