Homecoming floats go cartoonish

Building a float takes time, dedication and teamwork, even when working with the theme of the floats, “Animated Favorites.”

The float building process for Homecoming on Saturday will be complete on Friday evening.

By then, everyone will be exhausted with all the hours that have been put into the project and will be ready for the float judging which will take place at the stadium on Saturday at 11 a.m.

Homecoming candidate No. 2 Tiffany Gaskin of the Black Student Union, has the Smurfs as her float theme.

She is very anxious to see the completion of it all and stated, “I’m excited to get it started, to see our visions come onto the float.

“I’ve knocked out three and I have two more to go. I have this all paced out. I’m not looking at this as a competition, I’m looking at this as fun.”

Team effort was everywhere. Completely separate floats were working together and assisting each other in making sure everything was complete.

There were two groups of students, one from ISA and one from Kabarkada, that were working together by joining their floats. Eiman Farooqui, secretary for Kabarkada, explained that ISA was like an “umbrella” of the associating clubs.

The two clubs have a lot of the same members and they have the same adviser. Their themes this year are “Madagascar II” on one float and “Power Puff Girls” on the other.

The Flintstones float is a creation by the Dental Program.

Alicia Janssens, Dental Hygienist Jr. Class President explained about the placement of the actual Flintstones and how they will be rotating the characters on the float.

“We’ll be here all week and every night till 10 p.m., we’re definitely ready,” Janssens said.

Sparks were flying from the welding that was taking place at the Students Veterans Club float.

A very anxious David Cota, Student Veterans representative, had t-shirts to launch in some cannons that are placed around the float.

Lots of laughter, lots of snacks, cakes, cookies, chips and doughnuts were all around.

If you add the above ingredients along with some groovy techno music, that would lead you to where the QSA was preparing their float.

Their theme this year is geared toward a “Justice League” style, Joshua Kaanaana, QSA representative, said.

They want to bring different characters of all sorts, all together.

“There’s going to be Roger and Stewie, The Care Bears, Neptune Sailor, Sailor Uranus and Ace and Gary, The Ambiguously Gay Duo. This is my first year doing this and I am so excited,” Kaanaana said.
