S Olaiz – Homecoming float final event

If someone offered you $400.00, would you oblige? That’s a gracious amount that each club receives from the Student Activities Dept. for their float production in the Homecoming events that took place this Saturday Oct. 24.

There were 20 floats in this years 2009 Homecoming titled “Animated Favorites”. The building process took dedication, as it poured through their hands every evening the week of Oct. 19 – 23. “Finishing it and working with everybody was my favorite part.” said Broadcasting major and WPMD President Tito Benavides. As well as Jon McCarthy, second semester Electrical Engineer major said, “We had so many ideas, but Super Mario Bros was the general consensus of the class.” They had Broadcast Journalism major Mayra Salazar portray Princess Peach in hopes of Mario to save her.

There was a common denominator of the entire float building function. There was positive Cerritos College school spirit and that is the main focus that Dean Ackland always pushes with the Homecoming functions. He has said in past interviews regarding the 2009 Homecoming events, “I want this to be a fun experience for the girls and for everybody.”

The Sociology club chose Disney’s Pixar Up. Its inspiring and it fit that exact title. The Up float took home the Dr. Burnight Award for “Most Inspirational” Yvettte Serrano, a full time student, Sociology major, was more than excited to portray Carl. Standing along side her as Russell, was classmate and Sociology major, Adriana Albizures. Both girls were very anxious and very proud. They both agreed that volunteering and working together as a group was the best part.

Taking home the Board of Trustees Award “Most Creative and Original” was the Student Veterans club. Chris Markowski, History major and Veteran who served in Iraq for 14 months said, “Go full out with what you got. Use all available means.” That’s advice on float building coming from a Corporal in the Marines.
