Math Anxiety workshops

The world of algebraic functions, parabolas, and squares is heaven for some for others, it’s a love hate relationship. The Re-Entry Resource Program sponsored a Math Anxiety Workshop, for the students of Cerritos College, that fall into the Later.

The workshop was held in the Social Sciences building in room SS 139 on Feb. 4, and was presented by Sue Parsons, mathematics instructor.

“The workshop was a success. We had a great turn out, 21 students showed up in comparison to the previous no-shows we had other times,” said Shannon Estrada, of The Re-Entry Resource Program.

“Our main focus in this workshop was to have our students gain more confidence, and let go of that fear, the fear that comes from not knowing what you are going to get when dealing with a math problem,” she said.

Math games, puzzles, and study tips, were used as a form of tools to grasp and better understand the concept of not fearing math.

Students who attended the workshop were instructed by mathematics instructor Sue Parsons.

“The activities she had the students doing were solving puzzles, and different ways to work out problems in this case through games and activities,” added Estrada.

One of those students who attended the workshop, Joann Cyrs, undecided major said, “Professor Parsons did a good job, the workshop was fun and entertaining. I hadn’t taken math in 20 years, its challenging for me and worst of of all, I get anxiety when new material is presented.”

“Professor Parsons touched on several things that I personally relate to. She said it’s fine if you don’t know something, but it’s important to work through it(play with it) and don’t be afraid to ask for extra help.”

Other students like Raul Ortiz, archiecture major, were not informed about the academic support programs provided.  He said,”I didn’t know about the extra help we are being offered, but I would definitely take advantage of it.”

Joseph Joson, a nursing major stated,”I personally feel that Cerritos College is doing its best by offering tutoring and workshops. There are different places students can go to get the help they need and we are on the right road to success.”

“They should make more workshops, I have math anxiety, but I’m relieved to know that our school is taking into consideration that math is not something that a plethora of us master,” Cristina Gutierrez, English major, said.

The Re-Entry Resource program will continue to offer its academic support and workshops throughout the semesters for all students.
