Nursing major Lakeysa Smith anxiously winces while she prepares for a shot from Certified Medical Assistant Amber Haskert. Student Health Services is offering $5 flu shots for students who are interested.

The Student Health and Wellness Center is giving flu shots for students and faculty. The price is $5 for Cerritos students and $15 to faculty and staff.

November to April is mainly marked as flu season and nurse Nancy Montgomery is the person in charge of the program. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Institute of Health are helping the Student Health Center in providing the flu Vaccine.

“The shot include H1N1, H2N3 and Brisbane. Everyone is supposed to get one out of three shots, compared to the last year which included two shost from three of them,” Montgomery said.

Serena Elvers, business major, said, “I want to have the flu shot to be safe from influenza, and I think it’s cheap here compared to other store.”

“The vaccine the health center is providing is much cheaper compared to the one given in CVS pharmacy, taking into consideration to every student and faculty,” Montgomery said.

“It’s good that our college is providing flu shot, but it would be great if it was free. Many students won’t pay to get shots, they might ignore it,” Louis Valladolid, business major said.

There are many students who disagree with the flu shot. Ben Salazar, English major says, “I don’t agree with the flu shot. I know many people who had their flu shots and have more health complications and many who haven’t had their flu shot have a good life.”

Other students also had similar kinds of thoughts about getting the vaccine. “I don’t want to have a flu shot for me, as I have good metabolism,” Amaris Estela, English major said.

Side effects were rare last year as only few people had any side effects. If anyone’s immune system is weak and if have any diseases, it might bother with not only the flu shot but with every medication anyone takes. There are guidelines, fliers, and posters that are around the college,

Leonor Hernandez, nursing major says, “I am a Veteran and my medical needs are made elsewhere of campus, but I think everyone should get the flu shot, as it’s spreading rapidly.”

There are lots of chances of the flu shots getting finished right before the holidays. Everyone is supposed to get the vaccine one to two months before the flu season starts so that it can build a good immunity in the human body  if not, there is a large chance of a virus evading the body.

The Department of Health Services looks for major and most common flu viruses accordingly provides vaccines that bothered the largest number of people last year.

About 2000 flu vaccines are provided. Flu season has started early this year and Department of Health Services is sending a memo to all health centers stating that there are large incidents of flu viruses  coming.

Colleges need to buy vaccines of their own and work under Department of Health Services and should follow its guidelines.
