Mentoring day with Disability students- full

Cerritos College has a program on campus that helps disabled students do well with their work. On Oct. 21, the Disablity Rights Legal Center hosted a mentoring day for the disability students here at Cerritos College.

The 2010 mentoring day was directed by the American Association of People with Disabilities. Those who attended included students from Cerritos College, along with other students from different schools such as Cal State Long Beach, El Camino College, LA Trade Tech College, Los Angeles Harbor College and Mt. San Antonio College.

A mentoring day for the disability is to help them be comfrontable  with the students having whatever type of illness they have.

 

The mentoring day also helps the students seek jobs and as well as careers for their futures while they are still young.

 

The instructors that provides the students with information are disable as well. To show the students that they to can be successful in life.

 

There are numerous of disabilies  in this world, and some are still until this day are not name nor cured as well.

 

Maria Santiago a triple major; coaching, athletic trainer, and  fitness specialist says, ” I have a disability and it is called Dyslexia which is a learning disability that impairs a person’s ability to read, and which  can manifest itself. Dyslexia is separate and distinct from reading difficulties resulting from other causes. After I was told that I had a disability from my former junior college at Pasadena. What I learned at the mentoring day at Loyola Law School was how to create a resume, variety of tips on how to follow after what you believe in.”

As the students goes to station to station they get an up close look on how to not make themselves better as individuals.

Elizabeth Martinez major Business and Admistration: Disability; Spinal Stenosis she says, ” I have a Disability and it is called Spinal Stenosis. Which is a condition that causes a narrowing of the spinal canal and also compression of the spinal cord and nerves. Spinal Stenosis is usually the result of the aging process; however, a bulging or ruptured disc may also be the cause. Spinal Stenosis occurs in the cervical and lumbar areas of the spine. Back in 2005 i was in a car accident that cause my disability although i have a disability it still will not stop me from accomplishing my goals.”

The main the department that was present in the Disability Rights Legal Center was Raytheon, Water and Power, Boiew, Los Angeles Job Corp. Were present and had spokesmen to come out and speak to the students that came out to search for a job. The spokesmen were Disable themselves to show the students that if you decide to get into this department you can do it just me look at me.
