Workshop focuses on balancing student success

Time management, study skills, building a support system, and finding quality child care were among the things discussed on March 3, in a workshop titled Balancing Family and School.

Cerritos College students who find it difficult to balance their lives found four helpful tips introduced by Angela Beck, child development professor and guest speaker.

Students who struggle with balancing school, work, and family benefited from the workshop as they learned techniques that can benefit them in different areas of their lives.

Students like Honorah Harrison attended the workshop for extra credit, but others like sociology major Elizabeth Nieto, attended the workshop in hopes of finding answers to her hectic life.

“I have a heavy load. I hope to get structure out of the workshop,” Nieto said.

Beck explained to students how important it is to find techniques that work for each individual.

“Prioritize and find out what works for you,”  Beck said.

Beck also stressed the importance of focusing on one assignment and not multitasking.

“Do not multitask. It’s a bad idea. When we multitask we don’t concentrate or focus,”  Beck said.

Other things like starting assignments as early as students receive them, chunking projects and using professors as a helpful resource were also among the things discussed.

“What can you start with right now? Chunk your projects, take them piece by piece to avoid feeling overwhelmed.”

Students who have problems finding or paying for child care found excellent resources on where they can find child care for their children.

Information on child care can be found on www.laup.net or in community agencies such as Crystal Stairs, Children’s Home Society, or student groups on campus.

Shannon Estrada, Re-entry Resource Specialist, designs these type of workshops to help those students who have left school and are coming back.

“A lot of times [returning] students will tell me that they didn’t finish school because they got pregnant, or they got married, or life just happens.

“But it’s good they’re coming back, and they tend to be more focused when they come back so it’s awesome,” Estrada said .
