Not much progress has been made to get Cerritos College students into universities that are out of their local area priority.

The Associated Students of Cerritos College Senate has voted to throw in its support behind the Board of Trustees in its pursuit to lower GPA entrance requirements to Cal State Long Beach and Fullerton.

Board of Trustees President, Tom Jackson said, “The Board of Trustees has in the past asked the administration to work with the CSUs to alleviate the current situation of their discriminatory treatment of Cerritos college students.”

However, despite the support, Jasmin Ramirez, ASCC president, said, “We still need to figure out what our step forward would be to get our students into CSU Fullerton and Long Beach. “

Local area priority states that for colleges in their district, and those students out of high school, can apply to be accepted to the university with low GPA requirement such as 2.0. However, for out of area students, requirements resemble a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or 3.7

CSUF’s website states, “Out of area applicants will need to meet an even higher threshold of competition. Fall out-of-local quality indicators will be similar to last fall; however it is likely that local area quality indicators will rise resulting in reducing the number of local students admitted.”

Even with Cerritos College President Linda Lacy fighting to allow Cerritos students into universities that are local, Cerritos is still considered to be out of area.
