ASCC continues focus on student success

The Associated Students of Cerritos College creates opportunities for students to get involved around campus by organizing things such as student government, student services, student center, clubs and student activities.

There are several different branches of ASCC that students can participate in.

The student government consists of the cabinet which is the president, vice president and the commissioners.

Commissioners are delegated to different services and programs on campus such as music, athletics, student services and student outreach.

They report on what is going on in their respected areas and if they think any changes need to be made.

If a commissioner feels there is a change that needs to be made, it takes the change to senate where the change is put to a vote. Any laws, policies or bills have to be voted on by the senate.

The court oversees elections and hearings about grade grievances or anything related to the student constitution. “It is made up of students here at Cerritos College, so the court is your peers but they are professional and unbiased,” Student Trustee Areal Hughes said.

“I have no idea what ASCC is,” undeclared major David Borge said. Borge knows about activities on campus like the free In-N-Out served twice per semester but he had no idea that it is organized by ASCC.

“We have had an issue with student awareness, but right now it is all about getting the students involved,” ASCC President Jasmin Ramirez said.

Ramirez, who is going into her second semester as ASCC president, explains how communicating with current students can help with future involvement.

“Students can come into student activities and talk to myself, Julian Del-Real Calleros, the vice president, or any of my commissioners,” she said.

Hughes gives an example of how she has seen ASCC benefit students. “It teaches students leadership skills and teamwork. It puts them in situations that they never thought they would be in and teaches them how to get out of it or deal with it.”
