The renovation to the LC Building, this spring 2012 semester, greatly benefitted the Math Success Center.

Many students, especially those who needed help with math to meet their general – education requirement, are assisted by a number of part-time, as well as full-time professors at the math success center.

Kiran Khanal, a new math tutor to the college, teaches a range of students studying math 20 to 150.

“The Math Success Center is enormously helping those students who need help in the subject, and as soon as students sign their names on the white board, we assist the students as best as we can, but when we are not available, students can approach the math professors,” Khanal said.

However, to cover peak times when there are more students and less tutors, hiring more tutors would go a long way,” Khanal said.

The Math Success Center appeared as a novelty especially to the older generation of tutors.

Rey Ysais, who has been teaching math since 1952, and now a retired part time instructor, said, “The facilities are okay and the students are great, it wasn’t like his student days when there was no such support, and the student either had to figure things out themselves or hire a tutor.”

As to how the students are receiving the help given, Ysais believes as the subject is abstract and some people cannot think in the abstract, many students are not mathematically gifted, and they are more artistic. Ysais explained math is not concrete like you see in a picture or a house you built, it is strictly in the mind and that is why sometimes pictures and diagrams are more helpful.

Many students are finding the center a helpful avenue.

Miriam Autuniz, a liberal arts major, who has twice been to the center is already finding it very impressive and the coaching she receives, quite effective.

Monique Valencia, who worked at the center as an Adult Hourly Staff, feels changes to the LC Building commented are good because, it gives a place for the student to come, sit down and work on home studies, and It provides better study habits for the students, and when they need help they know where to go.
