2013 Outstanding Faculty Nominations preview

The Outstanding Faculty Nominations is a time to nominate any and all faculty that went out of their way in order for students to succeed.

Nominations are open to part-time and full-time faculty according to Campus Connection.

Francie Quaas-Berryman, a recipient from last year, explained how the process works.

“Anybody on campus (faculty, administrators, staff, and hopefully students) will write nominations that made an impact in their lives.

“Once the nominations are closed then those go to the committee and the committee evaluates them and decides which of the people get an award.”

There is a change to this year’s nominations.

This year people can nominate faculty and staff through the Cerritos College website.

Monica Lopez, who is involved with the Faculty Senate decided to put it online for a few reasons.

“We changed the nominations to online last year because it’s a lot easier and efficient for people to access, it saves paper and we can go green, there’s not a lot of work to put into it,” said Lopez.

Lopex added, “There is no set amount to nominating a teacher, but you can only nominate once to one category.”

Quaas-Berryman said, “When filling out the nomination form make sure that there are specific examples to why that faculty or staff should be nominated.”

Quass-Berryman also explained, “For the nomination to be seriously considered there needs to be an legitimate reason behind why that person should get It.”

He also didn’t think much about the reasons behind his nomination.

“I don’t think I had to step it up to be nominated this year. I don’t think about it,” Quaas-Berryman said about setting the bar higher in order to be nominated for this year’s Outstanding Faculty Nominations.

Quaas-Berryman is also part of the Puente Program at Cerritos College.

“I don’t know if being part of the Puente Program helped me get nominated because we never know (this is one of the things I wish we could know) we just find out that we got nominated. For me personally it would be far more meaningful to read the nominations because I think (again for me) knowing those things especially if their were student comments would be more meaningful than a plaque,” Quaas-Berryman said.

Expressing her feelings for being nominated she stated, “I always find it embarrassing. I don’t know why. That kind of attention I find it embarrassing.”

“I think it’s nice that people this that your work is useful work,” said Quass-Berryman.

This year nominations are being accepted online until Nov. 28, 2012.

The award ceremony will take place in the Student Center on Apr. 25, 2013 at 11 a.m.
