Guest speaker informs ASET Club about engineering opportunities

ASET Club arranges guest speaker to inform students interested in an engineering career in NASA on Nov. 27.

Guest speaker Vanaren Long, National Community College Aerospace (NCAS) program participant, spoke to ASET Club members, as well as non-ASET Club members who attended the event, about the NCAS program.

Long screened a powerpoint presentation containing photographs taken during his time in the NCAS program and information on how to sign up for the program.

“It’s not as hard as you think,” Long said about the application process.

Long described the NCAS program tour as a three-day experience consisting of one day of a tour of the facilities and two days of competition.

“It’s very exciting,” Long said about his experience in the NCAS program.

He encouraged the attendees to apply for the NCAS program if they are interested in a career with NASA.

According to Long, once you complete the program, you will receive priority over other applicants who are applying for an internship at NASA.

“I wanted to share my experience with them so that they feel encouraged to join the program,” Long said.

Long also brought two posters to give away to two students who can answer the questions he had.

Engineering major Gerardo Franco was one of the participants who won a poster.

He was the participant whose answer was closest to answering question what is the triple-point pressure of water?

He decided to attend the event after discovering that the ASET Club was going to have a guest speaker.

“I saw the posters all around campus,” Franco said.

Franco also commented on the ASET’s Club promotion method saying, “Their (ASET Club’s) marketing worked.”

ASET Club President Mario Bermudez states that the purpose of having the guest speaker was to inform students of the opportunities available to them in the engineering field.

“The purpose of having the guest speaker was having students connect with future internships and opportunities available for students at undergraduate levels including community colleges,” Bermudez said.

The next ASET Club meeting will take place on Dec. 4 at 11 a.m.
