Club Info Day to showcase ways to get involved on campus

With the spring 2014 semester beginning , students are starting to get settled and becoming aware of Club Information Day and Night on Tuesday, Jan. 28 and Wednesday, Jan. 29.

The event on Tuesday will be at 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and the event will recommence at 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., and the Wednesday event will have the same time of 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Many of the clubs that are at Cerritos College will be set up in Falcon Square to show students what they have to offer and allow students to sign up for these clubs.

“[It’s] for the clubs to get new members and your club can’t really grow if you don’t have new people putting their input,” Aldemar Sanchez said, who is the president of the Order of the Falcon, which is also known as the Harry Potter Club.

Sanchez not only sees it as an opportunity for the clubs, but the students as well and said, “It’s great for the students because it’s a gateway to get involved on campus. A lot of students don’t know that we have clubs on campus.”

Cynthia Chavez is the Student Events Specialist at Cerritos College and she is the one that coordinates the event by putting together the official form so the clubs can participate in it.

Chavez also sees the importance of the event and says, “It really allows students to ask questions one-on-one and get the answers directly instead of from the administration, who may not know everything that the clubs are doing.”

Alexandra Gomez is the president of the Psychology Club and thinks that students should go beyond just coming to class and says that participating in clubs can benefit the entire student body.

So when we have guest speakers, they learn about themselves, relationships, communication, better study habits and there is just so much to learn in psychology that is just applicable to every student here at Cerritos College.”

Although most of the clubs are academic, some of the clubs are more of a social club that brings together the people’s interests.

The Order of the Falcon usually has no problem getting its members due to the large fan base of the popular Harry Potter series.

“When we say Quidditch, everyone is like ‘no way!’, and start asking all these questions,” Sanchez said.

However the Order of the Falcon Club has taken some heat, according to Sanchez, for having a club that steers students away from the typical clubs that are directed at academics.

“We are a social club and we chose our meeting times at a time where no other clubs meet. Also at meetings we are always encouraging people to join other clubs that are out there,” Sanchez explained.
