The Associated Students of Cerritos College (ASCC) are hiring students to join their recycling nest program that pays $12.50 an hour.

It was started last year by members of ASCC, who put together The Go-Green Committee as a project to keep Cerritos College green to encourage and promote campus-wide participation in recycling.

The role as an employee (technician) consists of collecting and sorting all the recyclable material from the slanted top recycling bins that are located all over campus.

President of Associated Students Miles Aiello is part of the Go-Green committee. “I joined the Go-Green committee because it sparked my interest, and discusses real solutions to help shifting the culture on campus to a more green sustainability atmosphere.”

Currently, there are two students working in the program – Psychology major German Sanchez and Anthropology major Anthony Guerrero, who are part of the process to make this program possible and ready to have more students join their team.

“Since I was senator – commissioner, as well – I’ve obviously had my ear pretty close to the ground on this, and for years, (it has) been trying to establish a recycling program and when (it) announced there was going to be positions available, obviously I was really interested, so I put down my application as soon as it was available,” Sanchez said.

“I really really enjoy the work,” Guerrero said. “There is a learning curve when it comes to doing the work, but through time I build up my confidence, I understand that this work can be difficult at times especially out of the the heat but truth be told, it is kind of therapeutic to be out here collecting recyclables.”

Being part of the committee and working for the program has also helped Sanchez and Guerrero to recycle outside of campus in their homes and earn extra income.

In order to qualify for the position as a technician you must be a current student at Cerritos College taking and maintaining at least six units, able to do physical labor primarily outdoors, maintain a 2.25 overall GPA have no F’s from the spring 2014 and summer 2014 semesters and cannot receive an F during employment.

“We are looking to hire three employees. They will work roughly 10 hours per week, and no more than 20 hours,” Aiello said.

If hired, students must be available to work Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. during the academic year.

Guerrero also said, “It’s a job that’s on campus but pays above minimum wage. It’s something to be thankful for.”
