Unopposed presidential races are sad

It is a sad day at Cerritos College; the student leadership on this campus has virtually disappeared.

With the ASCC presidential elections going on, there is only one group that is officially running for the position.

Current commissioner of student outreach Oscar Franco is qualified and has the making of a great representative of the student body.

But the fact that nobody else has stepped up to fill this very important position is sad.

Maybe the problem is the vote last year to split the ASCC president and student trustee was a bad idea.

Perhaps the student leaders on this campus are gravitating toward the student trustee position, because there are four students running for that.

Maybe none of the would-be candidates received enough signatures on their petitions to officially run.

Another possibility can be the fact that in the economical state we’re in, students are intimidated to take such a high leadership role.

There are a few other candidates that are running, however they are not officially on the ballot and therefore voters must write in those candidates if they wish to vote for them.

This causes another problem because there is already an issue trying to get students to vote in first place.

Any extra effort that a voter must endure to vote is just another reason why they won’t.

Students on campus must step up and take this very important leadership role because without opposing viewpoints, we cannot have a great democracy.
