Social media does not hinder student education

There has been some debate around the Cerritos College campus over wether or not social media affects our education.

Social media is any medium for social communication such as, television, Facebook, Twitter, Skype, Oovoo, MySpace and Google Plus.

Tyler Cunningham, who is undecided on his major, believes that social media is a major distraction because it’s hard to focus on school work and be able to be on any social network.

“If you’re able to focus on your work and keep your grade point average up it’s a beautiful thing,” he said.

Undecided major Alvin Williams said, “Social media could go both ways as far as helping and hurting the students’ education.”

Williams also feels that it is important that students know how to manage their time.

There are certain students like nursing major Jaime Maglalang, who recommends that students should have a social network.

“Teachers nowadays post their home work on social networks,” he said.

It’s pretty much your decision if social net working hurts your education you should not be bothered with it until you are free from school.

“It’s so obvious that you have to take charge of your own responsibilities”.

“Everyone uses some type of social network, whether it’s in a positive or a negative effect on you, it’s a part of human nature”

Financial aid Adviser Lizette Gonzalez thinks that it could be a little time consuming.

“It could be a little distracting, but at the same time it gives students the opportunity to interact with other students”. She said.

Students have to be able to stay focused because it pays off in the long run.

Richard Garcia who works in the admissions office thinks social media helps you if you use it in the proper manner, then it should have a positive effect on students.
