February, which is also known as Black History Month, is a great way to show appreciation and celebrate the lives of people who have helped shape our culture.

People honor the contributions that African Americans have given the American society, although it was not always this way.

Originally African Americans were brought to America to serve as slaves during the colonial time, facing horrid treatment and were basically ignored as being part of society.

Despite the slavery time period that tainted our history as a nation, we have learned to overcome discrimination against minorities.

Black History Month is admired for many reasons, but we also know there are many other races who are not being celebrated with a whole month.

Perhaps we feel guilty for forming such a tragic history for African Americans, and once again we are segregating and prioritizing certain minorities.

It is definitely a positive thing to celebrate black history but an entire month seems a little over the top.

Overall, this is a nation funded upon the equality principle and leaving certain races out the loop is quite unfair.

Taking a look back to our history is essential to assure we don’t make the same mistakes all over again.

Discrimination filled the hearts of Americans with rage toward a certain race once before, and it is completely unacceptable for anything similar to take place in this nation again.

Therefore we need to recognize the significance and diversity different people bring to our culture. Treating them with the same amount of respect we would give to any person from whatever cultural background.

African Americans have showed us how perseverance and dedication to one’s nation can always pay off.

Disregard how harsh the situation may result at times; if we unite for our voices to be heard and be well represented we can break any barrier.

Martin Luther King had a dream where his race was treated equally, dream that became a reality thanks to his hard work and dedication.

Having pride for Black History Month is a huge example of growth. Of how we as a society have matured and now we are able to recognize all the good things African Americans have taught us.

Learning from our mistakes is what makes a person grow, and as long as we know no person deserves to be discriminated because of their skin color or where they come from. We’ve won that battle.

Without African Americans our nation would not stand as it does now.

In fact, our current president Barack Obama is an outstanding example of how everything is possible in the society we now live in.

We choose our political leaders by the knowledge and skills that can be brought to the table, not by their skin color.

I am thankful for Black History Month paying tribute to all the honorable men and women who have worked hard to make a difference in this country. They deserve to be remembered and be looked as an example for future generations to follow their footsteps and be proud of who they are.
