Men’s water polo swims into new season

Head coach Joe Abing’s men’s water polo team begun its season with a record of 3-1.

Last Saturday, it played at Golden West against four colleges- Golden West, Citrus, LA Valley and Mt. Sac.

The Falcons only lost was to Golden West College, who currently ranks No.1 in the state.

“Our first tournament I think went really well. Our only lost was to the best team. I think we could build upon what we learned from these games and continue to get better,” said Abing.

With 18 guys composing the team this season, Abing believes he has a really strong team this year.

“There is a strong returning group. In terms of setting an example for the new players, I think they do an excellent job.”

A lot of the returners know what to expect and are therefore leading the rest of the team.

Louie Espinoza, a returning driver,  in particular, has been named potential captain of the team for this season.

“I have a lot on my shoulders now that I’m leading the team. I have to step up to the captain title.”

Espinoza, is considered one of the four returning players who stand out along with utility Dan Biag, defender Ryan Tamula, utility Miguel Villalobos, and driver Borris Torres.

Abing also predicts that incoming freshmen utility Cory Baccus, driver Jesse Paredes, driver Pat Muniz, and goalie Kieran Hattie from New Zealand will have a major impact on the level of skill this team obtains.

“This team definitely has the potential to reach a conference title if it continues to stay focused and play together as a team,” Abing suggests.

Biag, a return utility, states they are working hard to get both conference and state titles.

“They are both in our graps,” he said, “We just have to continue putting all our hard work- and we will. We are commited to go 110% balls out and then some.”

Michael Torres, utility, adds, ” We have the best defense there is this year. The counter attacks are well strategized and strongly executed.”

Torres believes this year’s team contains a lot of new people with a lot of different styles of playing.

He said, “They all come together to create a Falcon style.”

As far as what he will contribute to the team, he replied, “I don’t plan to be a star, I plan to make the stars.”

“A lot of people think it’s just a bunch of wet guys in speedos but it’s not,” comments Espinoza.

“The sport itself is much more difficult than it appears to be. With the coaches and people who make up the team this year, I am positive we will play like the strong team I know we can be.”
