Baseball defeats College of the Canyons, 7-2

Hosting College of the Canyons, the Falcons looked like a conference winning ball club from beginning to end, winning 7-2 on Feb. 1.

College of the Canyons never made any significant plays that were game changing and that made this game an easy win for the Falcons.

Cerritos jumped out to a 3-1 lead through the first three innings and never looked back.

LHP George Sanchez pitched the majority of the ball game and stayed productive with strike-throwing pitches and played ones as well for his defense to make good plays for outs.

The Falcons also got good hitting out of the their team with clutch RBIs from catcher Paul Hayes, who hit an RBI triple in the forth inning to give Cerritos a 5-1 lead.

David Heff also hit an RBI the next inning to add another run to the lead.

The definitive key to this game was not offensive so much but, the strong disciplined defense Cerritos showed throughout the game.

Even when Sanchez came out the ball game, the defensive coverage stayed ready and caught every fly ball and turned grounders into outs.

There was a slight scare in the fifth inning when an umpire by second base was hit in his left ankle by a line drive.

Cerritos actually threw that hitter out at first base but the main focus, at least for the moment, was on the injured umpire.

That situation caused minor confusion with the home umpire who did not see the play at first base but the correct call was eventually made.

Pitcher George Sanchez said that the team definitely plans on making a strong run at winning conference and even state, and can do so as long as they keep playing that good team defense and continue to hit the ball the way they have.

With a long and busy schedule ahead of them, Cerritos has more than enough time to improve upon themselves and get better.

The Falcons get a day of rest and practice before going out to play at Chaffey College on Tuesday.
